UCF Stuns Fans with NCAA Tournament Return After Long Hiatus

UCF reaches the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament for the first time since 2019, set to face off against UCLA in a thrilling first-round matchup.

After a seven-year hiatus, UCF is back in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, and Knight Nation couldn't be more thrilled. Securing an at-large bid to the 68-team field, UCF will be competing in the East Region. This marks their sixth overall appearance in the tournament, but their first since the 2018-19 season.

The Knights, seeded tenth with a 21-11 record (9-9 Big 12), are set to face the seventh-seeded UCLA Bruins (23-11, 13-7 Big Ten) in a first-round clash at the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia on Friday. The stakes are high, with the winner moving on to face either 2nd-seeded UConn or 15th-seed Furman in the second round on Sunday.

UCF coach Johnny Dawkins shared his excitement, saying, “You’re always excited to hear your name called. It’s such an honor to be invited to this tournament. It’s the best tournament in sport, in my opinion, so having this opportunity is great.”

Dawkins couldn't hide his pride in his team’s journey. “I’ve said it all season long, how proud I am of this team.

I saw something this summer, just how competitive they were, and I carried it over throughout the season. So that made it really special, and to see our young people, you know, these are dreams that are made.”

The road to the tournament wasn't without its bumps. After an impressive 97-84 victory at then-No.

19 BYU on February 24, UCF hit a rough patch, ending the season with a three-game losing streak. They stumbled at home against Baylor and Oklahoma State and faced a tough defeat at West Virginia.

Despite these setbacks, UCF's season had standout moments, earning them a first-round bye in the Big 12 Tournament. They edged out Cincinnati in a nail-biting 66-65 overtime win in the second round before falling to top-seeded Arizona in the quarterfinals, 81-59.

What truly bolstered UCF’s tournament resume were their five Quad 1 victories over formidable opponents like Texas A&M, Kansas, Texas Tech, BYU, and TCU.

Historically, UCF holds a 1-5 record in NCAA Tournament games, with their last win coming against VCU in the first round of the 2018-19 tournament. As they prepare to take on UCLA, the Knights are eager to add another victory to their tournament legacy.
