Joel Klatt’s latest top 10 brought a few eye-openers, and the biggest one might be where he slotted Texas.
With the first College Football Playoff rankings set to drop Tuesday night, the sport is still in full chaos mode after nine weeks. Only three unbeaten teams remain - Miami, Utah and UCLA - and both Miami and Utah are headed into major tests this weekend. The Hurricanes face Notre Dame, while Utah meets BYU, so the opening playoff picture figures to get shaken up quickly.
Klatt, who breaks down the weekly slate on FOX alongside Gus Johnson during Big Noon, released his updated rankings after Week 9, and his list came with a few notable twists:
- Alabama
- Ohio State
- Kentucky
- Texas
- Utah
- UCLA
- Notre Dame
- Indiana
- Georgia
- Miami
The head-turner is Texas at No. 7.
“I know everyone’s going to be upset about this, but you know what? I don’t care,” Klatt said.
“I’ve got Texas at seven. If you look at their strength of schedule, their wins, if I was in the committee room, I would have them up there.
I would have them up there.
“They took care of Mississippi State 31-3…. They had 280 total yards.
Arch took five sacks in that game. They’ve got to get better than that.
Again, if it’s not an Arch centric offense, they’re a better offense. They’ve got to figure out how to run the football first..”
BYU, meanwhile, was left just outside Klatt’s top 10.
“BYU is just outside of my top 10,” said Klatt. “Kind of a disappointing performance against Arizona State.
That Arizona State team 4-3. You beat them by seven at home.”
Klatt also placed Ole Miss, LSU, USC and Wake Forest on the bubble. He noted that Ole Miss has a solid resume despite losses to Florida and Texas, while LSU and the Rebels still have time to work their way into the picture over the final four weeks. Wake Forest and USC, he said, can score in bunches and still control their own fate if they keep winning.

BYU Has One Real Opening In This Rivalry Upset Bid
Saturdays rivalry game gives BYU a chance to make noise in a matchup that has long tilted the other way. Utah arrives with the kind of history and overall edge that usually makes these meetings feel familiar, but the Cougars have reasons to believe this one can be different if they handle the moments that tend to decide tight college football games.
The broader preview around the matchup points to the usual swing factors in a rivalry upset bid: who is healthier, who can absorb pressure, and which team can turn current form into something that matters in the fourth quarter. BYU does not need the perfect script to make this interesting, but it does need the kind of clean, disciplined performance that can turn an uphill challenge into a real opening. [Read more 🡒]
Former BYU Star Just Forced His Way Into Arizonas Backfield Story
Tyler Allgeier spent Sunday looking every bit like the back the Cardinals needed when injuries thinned out their running back room. The former BYU standout handled the heavier load against the Dallas Cowboys and made the most of it, piling up a career-high 147 rushing yards on 11 carries while also adding five catches for 44 yards and a score.
Arizona needed every bit of that production in a game it had to claw back from a 17-3 deficit before pulling out a 33-30 overtime win. Allgeier sparked the rally with a 63-yard touchdown run and later hauled in a 5-yard touchdown catch, a performance that gave the Cardinals a much-needed jolt and raised the stakes around his role going forward. BYU Heads Into Utah With More Riding On This Rivalry Than Ever
No. 7 BYU heads to Salt Lake City this week for a rivalry game that carries far more than bragging rights. The Cougars will face No. 3 Utah at Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday morning, with kickoff set for 10 a.m. and the stakes rising well beyond the usual emotion that comes with this matchup.
For Kalani Sitake, the setting adds another layer. BYUs head coach spent time on Utahs staff and has a relationship with Utes coach Morgan Scalley, but the bigger picture is what this game could mean in the Big 12 championship race and the College Football Playoff conversation. In a rivalry already loaded with history, this one arrives with both programs positioned to make a major statement. [Read more 🡒]
