Puka Nacua Apologizes for Antisemitic Gesture During Livestream, NFL Issues Statement
Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua is facing criticism after a recent appearance on a livestream where he mimicked a gesture widely recognized as perpetuating antisemitic stereotypes. The moment, which took place during a broadcast with internet personalities Adin Ross and N3on, quickly drew backlash after Nacua performed a dance move that included spinning an imaginary dreidel and rubbing his hands together - actions that have been associated with offensive portrayals of Jewish people.
During the stream, Nacua even suggested he might use the gesture in a touchdown celebration, which only amplified the reaction online.
In response, Nacua took to social media on Thursday to issue a public apology. In his statement, he said the gesture was suggested to him during the livestream and that he was unaware of its offensive nature at the time.
“When I appeared the other day on a social media livestream, it was suggested to me to perform a specific movement as part of my next touchdown celebration,” Nacua wrote. “At the time, I had no idea this act was antisemitic in nature and perpetuated harmful stereotypes against Jewish people.”
He closed the statement with a direct apology, saying he does not condone hate or discrimination in any form.
“I apologize to anyone who was offended by my actions as I do not stand for any form of racism, bigotry or hate of another group of people.”
The NFL responded with a firm statement of its own, condemning Nacua’s actions and reiterating the league’s stance against antisemitism and hate speech.
“The NFL strongly condemns all forms of discrimination and derogatory behavior directed towards any group or individual,” the league said. “The continuing rise of antisemitism must be addressed across the world, and the NFL will continue to stand with our partners in this fight. Hatred has no place in our sport or society.”
As of now, there’s been no word from the league or the Rams on whether Nacua will face disciplinary action.
This moment marks a serious misstep for Nacua, who has been one of the NFL’s breakout rookies and a fan favorite in Los Angeles. While his apology acknowledges the harm caused, the situation serves as a reminder of the responsibility that comes with the spotlight - especially in a league that reaches millions across diverse backgrounds. The NFL has made its stance clear, and now the focus shifts to how both Nacua and the Rams move forward.
