BYU running back LJ Martin picked up another nod from the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award after a big day in the Cougars’ 41-23 win at Colorado State on Saturday.
Martin earned National Player of the Week honorable mention for his performance, adding to a growing list of recognition from the award that honors the top offensive player in college football who also reflects integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community involvement and the tenacity to overcome adversity in the pursuit of reaching goals. He was also named to the preseason watch list in August for the third straight year.
The 6-foot-2, 225-pound senior from El Paso, Texas, was explosive from the start. He finished with 15 carries for 176 yards, an eye-popping 11.7 yards per attempt, and scored three touchdowns in a little more than two quarters at CSU. He also caught one pass for nine yards on the opening drive of the second half, a play that helped set up a BYU touchdown and pushed the lead to 38-7.
Martin’s three first-quarter touchdowns matched the single-game high he set against Cincinnati in 2025. It also made him the first BYU player to score three rushing touchdowns in one quarter since Taysom Hill did it in the third quarter against Texas in 2014.
This wasn’t a one-off for Martin, either. During the 2025 season, he was an Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week honorable mention selection four times and was a semifinalist for the award.
He rushed for 1,305 yards, good for No. 11 nationally, and averaged 120.0 all-purpose yards per game, which ranked No. 13.
His 1,305 rushing yards as a junior ranked seventh in BYU single-season history.
To qualify for the award, a player must be at an FBS school in Texas or have graduated from a Texas high school. The 2026 watch list will be trimmed to about 16 semifinalists in November, then narrowed to five finalists in December.
The 2026 winner will be chosen by a panel of broadcasters, commentators, journalists, fans and previous award winners and announced in December. The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Banquet is set for Jan. 27, 2027, in Tyler, Texas.
