In a thrilling Big 12 Tournament quarterfinal clash, Houston's depth and resilience shone through as they edged out BYU 73-66 at the T-Mobile Center. The matchup featured standout performances from both sides, with Houston's Kingston Flemings leading the charge with 17 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Joseph Tugler chipped in with a solid 12 points, eight rebounds, and four assists, while Emanuel Sharp added 13 points and four boards, helping Houston (26-6) eliminate BYU for the second consecutive year.
BYU's freshman sensation AJ Dybantsa was nothing short of spectacular, pouring in 26 points, grabbing five rebounds, and dishing out two assists. His teammate Robert Wright III contributed 15 points and four assists, keeping BYU (23-11) competitive throughout the contest. Keba Keita was a force on the glass with 11 rebounds and added 8 points in the paint, while Aleksej Kostic's three 3-pointers, including a crucial late-game triple, kept BYU within striking distance.
The game began with Houston firing on all cylinders, hitting 7-of-11 from the field and limiting BYU to just 1-of-7 shooting. Chris Cenac Jr. added 8 points and three rebounds, as Houston dominated the paint with 18 first-half points to BYU's 12.
However, BYU fought back in the latter part of the first half, holding Houston to 7-of-18 shooting and converting 12-of-13 free throws. Kostic's consecutive 3-pointers capped a 9-2 run, giving BYU a 41-37 lead at halftime.
Houston's Flemings wasn't finished, scoring 5 points early in the second half to help Houston regain the lead. The Cougars stretched their advantage by keeping BYU scoreless from the field for over three minutes, and Cenac's contributions extended Houston's lead to 59-55 with just under eight minutes to play.
Despite Flemings picking up his fourth foul, BYU couldn't capitalize, struggling to find their rhythm against Houston's defense. The Cougars managed just 6-of-21 from the field in the second half, including a critical missed 3-pointer by Davis, which was quickly answered by a Chase McCarty triple, pushing Houston's lead to 64-58 with just over three minutes remaining.
In the end, Houston's balanced attack and defensive tenacity proved too much for BYU, sealing their fifth victory over the Cougars since both teams joined the Big 12 Conference in 2023.
