GameDay Backed BYU But One Warning Still Looms At UCF

As College GameDay showcases the high-stakes BYU-UCF matchup, analysts are divided on whether experience or momentum will lead to victory.

ORLANDO, Fla. - College GameDay once again had BYU in the spotlight on Saturday, with the Cougars’ road trip to UCF landing on the show’s “Saturday Selections” board.

That made for a clean split in the final tally: four picks for BYU, one for UCF.

Nick Saban backed the Cougars after pointing to what he saw in Provo last week. “For me, in Provo last week, the DNA of this (BYU) team seems like they have it together. I know they will be challenged by UCF today, but I’m going with BYU,” said Nick Saban.

Pat McAfee was just as direct in going with the road team. “How could you not go with BYU? … The BYU Cougars are mature enough to handle it,” said Pat McAfee.

Kirk Herbstreit also landed on BYU, but he got there with a few more details. He noted that last week BYU great Steve Young picked Utah to beat Colorado, helping him earn a perfect 10-0 record. Herbstreit said UCF QB Keyone Jenkins is the “key in this game” but highlighted Bear Bachmeier’s 18-2 record as a starting quarterback.

The only pick against BYU came from guest picker Dalton Kincaid, the former Utah star and current Buffalo Bills tight end. Kincaid followed McAfee in the order and said he doesn’t think BYU is mature enough to avoid the letdown at UCF. “They’re coming off an emotional win last week, and UCF has a homecoming game; I think they pull it out today.”

College GameDay’s final picks for BYU-UCF were:

Desmond Howard: BYU

Nick Saban: BYU

Pat McAfee: BYU

Dalton Kincaid: UCF

Kirk Herbstreit: BYU

BYU Just Made Its Support For Kalani Sitake Very Clear

BYU is backing up its public praise for Kalani Sitake with real money, as athletic director Brian Santiago confirmed the school is investing more than $25 million into football capital projects. The message coming out of Provo is that the university wants to keep building around its head coach, even as the athletic department works through administrative changes behind the scenes.

Santiago said the football oversight structure will be a collaborative one with Vice President Keith Vorkink, and the focus is on lifting the program even higher. That comes at a time when BYU is sitting No. 2 nationally, its best ranking since 1984, which only adds to the sense that the Cougars see this as a moment to push forward rather than reset. Nick Saban Just Put BYU And Kalani Sitake In The Spotlight

Nick Sabans recent appearance on the Pat McAfee Show gave BYU another national moment, and it came with a pretty flattering nod from one of the sports most respected voices. Saban praised the excitement and passion of Cougars fans, and he also singled out Kalani Sitake for the leadership he has brought to the program, adding to the sense that BYU has become one of college footballs more compelling stories this season.

The praise landed with even more weight because Saban pointed to the confidence BYU carried into its game against Notre Dame, a performance that helped fuel the buzz around the program. The Cougars College GameDay appearance drew more than 3 million viewers, and 9.2 million watched the upset of Notre Dame, so the spotlight on Sitakes team is no longer just local or regional. The bigger question now is how much more attention this run can keep generating. [Read more 🡒]

BYU Freshmans $2 Million Moment Hasnt Changed His Daily Life

Carter Smiths big moment on ESPNs College GameDay sent the BYU freshman from campus routine to national attention in a hurry, but the aftermath has been far less glamorous than the scene suggested. Smith drilled a field goal on the shows Kicking is Easy segment and set off a $2 million windfall, with $1 million pledged to charity, yet his day-to-day life has stayed mostly the same as he keeps up with his studies and waits for the prize process to play out.

The money has not hit his account yet, and there are still tax withholdings and other steps to work through with ESPN before anything is finalized. For now, Smith remains in the same academic rhythm he was in before the kick, a reminder that even a life-changing moment can take time to become real, especially when the paperwork is still catching up to the headline.
