In a much-needed boost for both their morale and tournament resume, BYU pulled off a significant win with a 79-69 victory over #6 Iowa State in Provo. The timing couldn't have been better, as the committee had just released its top 16 seeds earlier in the day, placing Iowa State as the fourth #1 seed.
AJ Dybantsa was nothing short of phenomenal, logging all 40 minutes and flirting with a triple-double. His stat line of 29 points, 10 rebounds, and 9 assists tells only part of the story. Dybantsa's defensive prowess was on full display as he relentlessly chased Iowa State's sharpshooter, Milan Momcilovic, off screens, limiting the nation's top shooter to just 1-4 from beyond the arc.
While Rob Wright had a quieter night with 6 points, BYU found other heroes to step up. Kennard Davis emerged as a key contributor, adding 17 points and hitting 3 of his 8 attempts from downtown.
Mihailo Boskovic, earning his second consecutive start, capitalized on the opportunity with a career-high 13 points. Off the bench, Khadim Mboup made his presence felt on the boards, snagging 10 rebounds, with 9 coming in a dominant first half performance.
Despite struggling from beyond the arc, shooting just 7-25 (28%), BYU's hustle on the glass was evident, winning the rebound battle 38-29. They also managed to keep their turnovers in check against Iowa State's pressure defense. The Cougars' defensive efforts shone through as they held Iowa State to 33% from three-point range and dominated the paint with a 40-22 scoring advantage.
This victory not only boosts BYU's spirits but also strengthens their standing in the eyes of the selection committee, proving they can hang with the best in the nation.
