BYU has filled its open assistant coaching spot with a name that brings serious NBA mileage.
Kevin Young announced Monday that Patrick Mutombo is joining the Cougars’ men’s basketball staff, taking the place of Will Voigt, who departed for Boise State earlier this offseason after two years in Provo.
Young made clear how much he values the addition.
“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Patrick and his family to Provo,” Young said in a statement.
“Patrick is one of the best humans I’ve met in the game of basketball. Cougar Nation will love him and his family.
He has tremendous experience in the NBA and with USA Basketball that will be of great benefit to all of our players and staff. We couldn’t be more excited to add the Mutombo family to BYU basketball.”
Mutombo comes to BYU after a decade as an NBA assistant, working with the Denver Nuggets, Toronto Raptors, Phoenix Suns, Milwaukee Bucks and Memphis Grizzlies. During that stretch, his teams reached the playoffs nine times. He also owns a championship ring from Toronto’s 2019 title run and spent the 2022-23 season on Young’s staff in Phoenix.
His coaching background also includes two seasons as head coach of the Raptors’ G League affiliate, plus one year each as an assistant with the Austin Spurs and at Metro State, his alma mater.
Mutombo has worked with some of the league’s biggest names along the way, including Kawhi Leonard, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kevin Durant and other All-Star players.
Before his coaching career took off, he was a standout player at Metro State, where he won two Division-II national championships. He also played professionally overseas from 2003-09.
