BYU is keeping things classic for Saturday’s top-10 showdown with Notre Dame.
The Cougars revealed they’ll go with a white helmet featuring a royal blue stretch Y logo and decals, a royal blue jersey and white pants with royal blue stripes when the Irish come to LaVell Edwards Stadium. It’s a familiar look, but one that has history attached to it.
This will be the first time BYU has worn its royal blue uniform against Notre Dame since 1993. The last time the Cougars used this exact combination came last season against TCU, when they rolled to a 44-13 win over the Horned Frogs.
Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. (MDT) on ABC. Radio coverage will be available on KSL NewsRadio, 102.7 FM and 1160 AM in Utah, with pregame beginning at Noon.
BYU has already leaned on a variety of looks in 2026, opening with an all-royal setup against Utah Tech and then moving through a mix of white, navy and royal combinations before settling on this week’s simplified approach for Notre Dame.
The 2026 slate so far has included an all-white look at Colorado State, the “Royal Sitake” uniform at TCU, and white helmets with navy blue uniforms against Iowa State. The Cougars’ remaining games listed are at UCF, Arizona State, at Utah, Baylor, at Kansas and Cincinnati.
Last season brought an even wider mix. BYU wore everything from a navy blue helmet and uniform combination against Portland State to the throwback 1996 uniforms against Kansas State in honor of the program’s 100th season. The Cougars also used the “ROYAL SITAKE” look at Wyoming, the all-white set at Colorado in the bowl game, and several other combinations across a 13-game stretch.
The 2023 season featured another long list of uniform choices, including the royal helmet and jersey against Sam Houston, the traditional white helmet and royal blue pants at Arkansas, and the blacked-out look against Iowa State.

BYU Just Made A Clear Statement Before Notre Dame
BYU is leaning into tradition for one of the biggest stages on its schedule. The Cougars announced they will wear their classic royal home jerseys with white pants and a white helmet, finished with a royal blue facemask, for the matchup against Notre Dame, a look that calls back to the programs identity from the 1980s and 1990s.
It is also a deliberate choice in a season where BYU has rotated through several uniform combinations, but wanted something more recognizable for this one. The classic set was last worn in November 2025 against TCU, and the selection feels aimed at matching the moment as much as the opponent, with the Cougars choosing a familiar brand for a high-profile game. BYU Just Showed UCF What Makes This 2026 Matchup Dangerous
A glance at UCFs 2026 schedule already shows why road trips and league games in that stretch will not come with much margin for error. BYU, Pittsburgh and Houston have all put themselves into the AP Top 25 mix, and recent results across that group have offered a reminder that these are not just name-brand opponents but teams capable of swinging games with quarterback play, timely defense and enough depth to make September or later meetups feel bigger than they might look on paper.
BYUs latest win over Iowa State, with Bear Bachmeier steering the offense, is the one that should especially catch UCFs attention because it underscores how quickly a ranked team can dictate terms when the quarterback settles in and the game script tilts its way. Pittsburghs stumble against North Carolina and Houstons win over Kansas State only add to the picture: UCFs future opponents are going to arrive with different strengths, different forms of momentum and plenty to prove, which is exactly what makes that 2026 slate feel dangerous before it even gets here. BYU Has A Short-Yardage Problem It Must Solve Before Notre Dame
BYUs red-zone issues against Iowa State offered a clear reminder that short-yardage football is still very much a work in progress, especially without star running back LJ Martin in the mix. The Cougars finished with two touchdowns in five red-zone trips, and the absence of a reliable between-the-tackles option forced the offense to lean harder on the passing game once the field tightened.
Three failed red-zone drives told the story of an attack that could move the ball but had trouble finishing when the margin shrank. Backup backs had a difficult time creating yards inside, and even the throws BYU needed in those moments were not easy to complete, leaving the Cougars with a problem they need to sort through quickly before Notre Dame arrives.
