BYU Is Suddenly Right In The Middle Of The No. 1 Fight

Brian Kelly challenges conventional rankings, questioning Miami's top spot despite their impressive season.

Brian Kelly isn’t ready to hand the No. 1 spot in college football to Miami just yet.

The Hurricanes may have climbed to the top of the AP poll after a wild weekend, but Kelly said he’d still lean toward Georgia if he had to choose the team he trusts most. The former Notre Dame and LSU coach, now an analyst for CBS Sports Network, laid out his case on College Sports Radio on Sirius XM.

“By default, I’d probably go with Miami because they’re undefeated, and now their best win is still a top 25 win, but I usually go in this part of the year when you don’t have one, I go with the guy that I trust the most,” Kelly said on College Sports Radio on Sirius XM.

That coach, in Kelly’s view, is Kirby Smart.

“The guy that I trust the most to win me a game when I need a game is Kirby Smart. I just trust him.”

Kelly’s faith in Smart comes after Georgia’s huge road win over No. 6 Alabama two weeks ago, a result that briefly pushed the Bulldogs to No.

  1. But Georgia followed that up with a stunning home loss to unranked Auburn, and Smart said after the game that his team was emotionally and physically drained after the Alabama win.

Even with that setback, Kelly wasn’t willing to bury the Bulldogs.

“I know they lost the game. They were not the best team that day, but that doesn’t mean they’re not the best team in the country,” Kelly said of Georgia.

The AP poll gave Miami 40 first-place votes after the Hurricanes beat Florida State in double overtime, but 20 others went to BYU, which had its own huge day by knocking off then-No. 2 Notre Dame. BYU moved up to No. 2 and suddenly looks like a real force in the Big 12.

ESPN’s rankings took a different route, putting Ohio State at No. 1 after the Buckeyes ended Indiana’s 22-game win streak.

Kelly wasn’t interested in declaring a clear-cut best team after all that chaos.

“So long story short, I don’t know that there’s one that I would put my hat on. I think there’s a bunch of really good teams, and I think this is going to be a fun year to find out at the end.”

BYU Suddenly Has A Backfield Question That Could Shape Everything

Bear Bachmeiers week of national recognition and Cade Uluaves conference honor after the win over Notre Dame put a bright spotlight on BYU, but the Cougars also came out of that game with a more practical question hanging over the offense. With LJ Martin and Sione Moa both slowed by injuries, backup runners Preston Rex and Journee Tonga were forced into bigger roles, and they answered with enough impact to keep the offense moving in one of the biggest wins of the season.

Now the attention shifts to what comes next in the backfield, especially with BYU continuing to assess Moas readiness after a history of injury. Kalani Sitake praised the growth and contributions of the running backs, but the Cougars still have to sort out how much depth they truly have and how they want to use it as the season moves forward. BYU Fans Will Want To See Where Bear Bachmeier Ranks Now

Week 7 in the Big 12 offered another useful snapshot of the quarterback landscape, and for BYU fans, it is the kind of week that naturally shifts the conversation toward where Bear Bachmeier fits among the leagues best. The latest review of conference passers pulled together recent performances, matchup context and team stakes before setting up a fresh top-eight ranking entering Week 8, giving a clear sense of how much movement there has been at the position.

For BYU, the interest is not just in where Bachmeier lands, but in what the ranking says about the Cougars place in the Big 12 conversation overall. With another round of league games on deck, the quarterback pecking order remains fluid, and the next update could look very different depending on who keeps playing at a high level and who seizes the biggest stage in Week 8. BYU Gets A Huge Opportunity In A Top-10 Road Test At UCF

Saturdays matchup in Orlando has the feel of one of those late-season conference games that can shift a teams entire path in a hurry. BYU goes in as the favorite and trying to keep its Big 12 unbeaten streak intact, but it is also doing so without starting running back LJ Martin, which puts a little more pressure on the offense to keep finding answers on the road.

UCFs injury report only adds to the uncertainty around the game, with a sizable group of players tagged as questionable or probable and starting quarterback Alonza Barnett III among them. Even if Barnett is limited, Keyone Jenkins is lined up to make his fifth straight start, which gives this trip an added layer of intrigue for BYU as it tries to handle a wounded opponent in a place where road games rarely stay simple for long.
