BYU Heads Into Utah Showdown With One Huge Availability Concern

BYU releases its latest availability report, highlighting key player statuses ahead of their crucial matchup against No. 3 Utah.

BYU’s first availability report for Saturday’s top-10 showdown at Utah delivered the headline everyone was watching for: LJ Martin is not ruled out.

The running back, who has been sidelined since the October 3 injury against TCU, moved from “OUT” to “DOUBTFUL” ahead of the No. 9 Cougars’ trip to face No.

3 Utah. Under the Big 12’s reporting system, that puts him in the “unlikely to play” range, with a 25% chance of suiting up.

Martin has been practicing this week as he continues to recover from the lower-body injury he suffered early in the win at TCU. The league’s track record on these reports doesn’t exactly inspire optimism, either.

This season, only two Big 12 players have gone from an opening “Doubtful” designation to “Available” by week’s end, and both were Colorado players in the September 26 game at Baylor. A few others have at least climbed from “Doubtful” to “Game-time decision.”

BYU also listed starting cornerback Evan Johnson and tight end Roger Saleapaga as doubtful. Saleapaga was hurt on a first-down catch late in the fourth quarter of last week’s win over Arizona State, while Johnson is still working back from the lower-body injury he picked up in the October 24 loss at UCF.

The Cougars’ “OUT” group includes three familiar names: Jonathan Kabeya, Pierson Watson and Seth Shigg. Defensive end Vincent Tautua was added to that list as well. He saw his first game action last week in Week 3 at Colorado State, but now shows up as out for this one.

There is some good news for BYU, too. Running back Preston Rex is not listed on the report and is expected to be available against Utah.

Kickoff specialist Brody Laga is also listed as probable after being out since a bye-week injury in September. He went through pregame warmups last week but did not play.

The rest of the report leaves a few more names in the middle ground. Safety Joseph Douglas, defensive end Kendal Wall and defensive end Siosefa Brown are all questionable.

BYU and Utah are set for Saturday, November 7, 2026, with kickoff at 10 a.m. MST. The game will be on KSL NewsRadio, 102.7 FM and 1160 AM.

BYU Heads To Utah With Its Big 12 Hopes Suddenly On The Line

A decisive win over Cincinnati pushed Utah to the top of the Big 12 standings and suddenly made the conference race feel a lot tighter for everyone else, including BYU. With Arizonas loss to Texas Tech effectively knocking the Wildcats out of title contention, the path through the league is narrowing fast as the calendar turns to Week 10 and the stakes keep rising.

Now the Cougars head to Utah for a matchup that could reshape the Big 12 championship picture in a hurry. It is the kind of late-season game that can swing more than one conversation at once, with bowl eligibility also in play around the league, but for BYU the bigger question is whether this trip keeps its title hopes alive or hands the edge to the team sitting at the top. BYU Faces Its Biggest Holy War Test With Doubts Still Lingering

Week 10 brings one of the biggest games on BYUs schedule, and the Holy War arrives with both teams carrying real weight in the rankings. No. 9 BYU gets No. 3 Utah in a matchup that has plenty of national attention attached to it, but for the Cougars it is also the kind of measuring-stick game that can clarify just how far this season can go. The buildup has centered on how each team has been playing and which key pieces will be available, the sort of details that can swing a rivalry game before the first snap.

For BYU, the intrigue is not just the opponent but the uncertainty still hanging over the matchup. Utahs form and personnel situation have made this a difficult one to sort through, and the article frames it as a game where the margin for error should be thin from start to finish. A prediction is part of the conversation, but the larger issue for the Cougars is whether they can answer the doubts that come with facing one of the best teams on the schedule at the most pressure-packed moment of the season. BYU Just Reached A Crucial Point In Pursuit Of Elite Prospect

BYUs pursuit of Luka Lukic has reached a meaningful stage, with the 2027 international prospect set to begin a busy run of official visits in the United States this week. Jonathan Givony reported that the Cougars are among eight schools on the itinerary, and BYU is scheduled to host him on Saturday after recruiting him for months.

Lukic has already built a strong rsum for a young player, starring for a club in Spain while also representing Serbia on the international stage. He helped lead Serbias U17 team to a silver medal at the FIBA U17 World Cup and was named MVP at the NBA/FIBA Basketball Without Borders event, which helps explain why so many programs are now making room for him on their calendars.
