BYU Gets The Stage It Needs To Prove Its Playoff Case

With pivotal matchups and rising stakes, Week 7 could redefine the Big 12's path to national recognition and postseason opportunities.

Week 7 is lined up to be the Big 12’s biggest stage yet this season, and the setup is impossible to miss.

Three games. Four ranked teams.

Seven hours. All of it on broadcast TV.

It starts with Arizona State and Texas Tech at 12:30 p.m. Pacific, rolls into Oklahoma State-Houston at 4:30, and finishes with BYU-Notre Dame in primetime.

If you add ESPN’s “College GameDay” from Provo, the conference will own the spotlight for more than 10 hours. For a league that has spent this season chasing national attention, this is the kind of window that matters.

The stakes go beyond eyeballs. The Big 12 has not landed an at-large berth in the 12-team CFP era, with Arizona State in 2024 and Texas Tech last season serving as the conference’s only playoff representatives as champions.

Another flat Saturday would make the league’s case harder when the selection committee starts sorting things out on Dec. 6.

The first rankings are due in three weeks, so this is no longer the part of the calendar where performances can be shrugged off.

There are real questions hanging over each of the marquee teams involved. Can Arizona State prove it belongs in the championship conversation?

Is Texas Tech actually vulnerable, or just holding back against weaker opponents? Are Oklahoma State and Houston good enough to play for the conference title?

And can BYU look like a playoff team against a national championship frontrunner?

The answer to those questions will say plenty about the league as a whole.

For now, here’s how the Hotline sees the Big 12 after Week 6 and heading into one of the season’s most important Saturdays.

  1. Utah (5-0/2-0)

Result: beat Kansas 41-24

Next up: at Colorado (7:15 p.m. on ESPN)

  1. BYU (5-0/3-0)

Result: beat Iowa State 24-10

Next up: vs. Notre Dame (4:30 p.m. on ABC)

Comment: The Cougars need a run game that keeps Notre Dame’s defense honest. Without LJ Martin, quarterback Bear Bachmeier had to do the heavy lifting against Iowa State, and he’ll be asked to shoulder plenty again this week. (Last week: 2)

  1. Arizona (5-1/2-1)

Result: won at West Virginia 52-31

Next up: idle

Comment: It’s not every day a team wins by three touchdowns on the road while allowing 522 yards, but Arizona made that happen with four explosive touchdowns and a defensive score in Morgantown. (Last week: 4)

  1. Texas Tech (5-0/2-0)

Result: did not play

Next up: vs. Arizona State (12:30 p.m. on Fox)

  1. Oklahoma State (4-1/2-0)

Next up: at Houston (4:30 p.m. on Fox)

  1. Houston (5-1/2-1)

Next up: vs. Oklahoma State (4:30 p.m. on Fox)

Comment: Houston’s win in Manhattan was the first result this season that matched expectations, and it was more one-sided than the final score indicates. (Last week: 6)

  1. Baylor (4-1/2-0)

Result: did not play

Next up: vs. TCU (4 p.m. on FS1)

Comment: Baylor’s only loss came by a point against Auburn in the opener, when Dave Aranda chose to go for the win instead of settling for the tie. If the Bears had made the two-point try, or kicked the extra point and won in overtime, they’d still be unbeaten. (Last week: 7)

  1. Arizona State (3-2/1-1)

Result: beat Hawaii 30-12

Next up: at Texas Tech (12:30 p.m. on Fox)

Comment: The lead-in to Texas Tech went smoothly, with Arizona State putting together a 231-yard rushing day and Cutter Boley building confidence at quarterback. (Last week: 8)

  1. West Virginia (3-3/0-3)

Result: lost to Arizona 52-31

Next up: vs. Cincinnati (9 a.m. on TNT)

  1. UCF (3-3/1-2)

Next up: idle

  1. Cincinnati (4-1/1-1)

Next up: at West Virginia (9 a.m. on TNT)

  1. Kansas State (3-2/0-2)

Result: lost to Houston 35-16

Next up: vs. Kansas (9 a.m. on FS1)

Comment: Avery Johnson was not effective from the pocket against Houston. (Last week: 12)

  1. Iowa State (3-3/1-2)

Next up: idle

  1. Kansas (2-3/0-2)

Next up: at Kansas State (9 a.m. on FS1)

  1. TCU (2-3/0-2)

BYU Just Made A Clear Statement Before Notre Dame

BYU is leaning into tradition for one of the biggest stages on its schedule. The Cougars announced they will wear their classic royal home jerseys with white pants and a white helmet, finished with a royal blue facemask, for the matchup against Notre Dame, a look that calls back to the programs identity from the 1980s and 1990s.

It is also a deliberate choice in a season where BYU has rotated through several uniform combinations, but wanted something more recognizable for this one. The classic set was last worn in November 2025 against TCU, and the selection feels aimed at matching the moment as much as the opponent, with the Cougars choosing a familiar brand for a high-profile game. BYU Just Added A Tradition Twist To Notre Dame Week

BYU is leaning into a familiar look for one of its biggest nonconference stages of the season, unveiling a white helmet with the royal blue stretch Y logo, a royal blue uniform and white pants with royal blue stripes for Saturdays game against Notre Dame. The timing adds a little extra texture to a matchup that already carries plenty of tradition, especially with the Cougars taking a throwback route that has not been used against the Irish since 1993.

The combination was last worn in a game against TCU the previous year, giving this weekends choice a bit of an old-school feel without straying far from BYUs identity. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. MDT, with ABC carrying the game, and the uniforms add one more layer to a meeting that figures to draw plenty of attention well before the opening snap. [Read more 🡒]

BYU Just Showed UCF What Makes This 2026 Matchup Dangerous

A glance at UCFs 2026 schedule already shows why road trips and league games in that stretch will not come with much margin for error. BYU, Pittsburgh and Houston have all put themselves into the AP Top 25 mix, and recent results across that group have offered a reminder that these are not just name-brand opponents but teams capable of swinging games with quarterback play, timely defense and enough depth to make September or later meetups feel bigger than they might look on paper.

BYUs latest win over Iowa State, with Bear Bachmeier steering the offense, is the one that should especially catch UCFs attention because it underscores how quickly a ranked team can dictate terms when the quarterback settles in and the game script tilts its way. Pittsburghs stumble against North Carolina and Houstons win over Kansas State only add to the picture: UCFs future opponents are going to arrive with different strengths, different forms of momentum and plenty to prove, which is exactly what makes that 2026 slate feel dangerous before it even gets here.
