The spotlight in Provo has been building for a while, and Saturday finally delivers the matchup everyone around BYU circled from the start: No. 2 Notre Dame at No. 8 BYU.
Both teams arrive unbeaten, both have handled their early schedules, and both now step into the kind of test that tells you what a season really is. Notre Dame is 6-0 against the nation’s 63rd-toughest schedule, according to ESPN’s power index.
BYU is 5-0 against the 86th toughest. That’s the setup.
Now comes the part that matters.
For Notre Dame, this is another stop on the “Leave No Doubt” tour, the one the Fighting Irish started after being left out of the College Football Playoff despite winning 10 straight after losses by a combined four points to two ranked teams. No. 3 Miami is still sitting there three weeks down the road, but first comes BYU in one of the loudest settings the Irish will face all season.
For the Cougars, though, this feels bigger than a single Saturday night. It’s the first top-10 matchup ever at LaVell Edwards Stadium, and that alone gives it a place in the program’s history. Beyond that, it’s a chance for BYU to grab the kind of win that has always seemed just out of reach.
The Cougars have had flashes of greatness. They were the national champion in 1984 as the only unbeaten and untied team in the country, though critics have long waved off that title because of the old Western Athletic Conference schedule.
They stunned No. 1 and reigning national champion Miami in 1990, 28-21, a victory that helped push Ty Detmer toward the Heisman Trophy. Afterward, Detmer said, “We wanted respect.
I think we have that now,” but the season still ended in frustration with losses to Oregon, Hawaii and Texas A&M.
BYU has also had seasons that looked like they might become something more. In 1996, the Cougars won a school-record 14 games, but an early loss to Washington and that same flimsy WAC slate kept them out of the national championship discussion. They finished No. 5 in The Associated Press Top 25 and haven’t been in the final top 10 since.
Recent years have brought more near-misses. BYU opened 9-0 in 2024 before losing at home to a 3-6 Kansas team and then at Arizona State, knocking them out of playoff position. Last year, they got to 8-0 before ugly losses a month apart to Texas Tech, first in Lubbock and then in the Big 12 championship game.
That’s why this one carries so much weight. A win over Notre Dame could give BYU a major boost toward an at-large playoff spot if it doesn’t win the Big 12, and it would stand as the program’s most important victory since that Detmer-led upset of Miami 36 years ago. A loss wouldn’t wipe out the Cougars’ playoff chances, with the rest of the Big 12 schedule still ahead, but it would be another painful reminder of how often BYU has fallen just short outside of 1984.
Indiana’s comeback win over Nebraska also shook up the top of the rankings. The Hoosiers erased an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit and won 20-17, moving up two spots to No. 5 and setting up Saturday’s home game against No. 4 Ohio State as the second top-five matchup of the season.
Nebraska held Indiana to 65 rushing yards and forced the Hoosiers into a rough offensive day, including just 1 of 10 on third downs. ESPN noted that Indiana had won only one of its previous 122 games when entering the final quarter down by double digits. Afterward, coach Curt Cignetti was asked how his team could play so poorly for most of three quarters and still win.
“You’ve got to have an indomitable will, man,” he said, “a will that cannot be defeated or subdued. And you’ve got to be resilient, have the ability to overcome the unexpected, and no matter how bad it gets, you never let anxiety, frustration enter your mindset.
You’re going to find a way. It’s just a matter of time.”
Kentucky’s field-storming celebration after its 35-34 overtime upset of then-No. 10 LSU came with a price.
The Wildcats climbed from unranked to No. 15 after their second straight one-point overtime win, but the Southeastern Conference fined Kentucky $500,000 on Sunday for violating its access to competition area policy. The money will go to LSU, since the Tigers are an SEC member.
For nonconference games, those fines go to the SEC’s Post-graduate Scholarship Fund.
There was more movement at the top as Georgia replaced Texas at No. 1 in the AP Top 25 after beating Alabama 20-17. Georgia has now been ranked No. 1 in at least one poll in five of the last six seasons.
Texas’ loss to Oklahoma was the first by a No. 1 team against an unranked opponent since Alabama fell to Vanderbilt in 2024. In the Top 25 era, there have been 11 instances of an unranked team beating the No. 1 team, and only four of those winners landed in the rankings the next week. The most recent example was Texas A&M moving in at No. 21 after beating Alabama in 2021.
Oregon also saw a streak end, dropping out of the Top 25 and bringing its run of 70 straight poll appearances to a close.

BYU Just Made A Clear Statement Before Notre Dame
BYU is leaning into tradition for one of the biggest stages on its schedule. The Cougars announced they will wear their classic royal home jerseys with white pants and a white helmet, finished with a royal blue facemask, for the matchup against Notre Dame, a look that calls back to the programs identity from the 1980s and 1990s.
It is also a deliberate choice in a season where BYU has rotated through several uniform combinations, but wanted something more recognizable for this one. The classic set was last worn in November 2025 against TCU, and the selection feels aimed at matching the moment as much as the opponent, with the Cougars choosing a familiar brand for a high-profile game. BYU Just Added A Tradition Twist To Notre Dame Week
BYU is leaning into a familiar look for one of its biggest nonconference stages of the season, unveiling a white helmet with the royal blue stretch Y logo, a royal blue uniform and white pants with royal blue stripes for Saturdays game against Notre Dame. The timing adds a little extra texture to a matchup that already carries plenty of tradition, especially with the Cougars taking a throwback route that has not been used against the Irish since 1993.
The combination was last worn in a game against TCU the previous year, giving this weekends choice a bit of an old-school feel without straying far from BYUs identity. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. MDT, with ABC carrying the game, and the uniforms add one more layer to a meeting that figures to draw plenty of attention well before the opening snap. [Read more 🡒]
BYU Just Showed UCF What Makes This 2026 Matchup Dangerous
A glance at UCFs 2026 schedule already shows why road trips and league games in that stretch will not come with much margin for error. BYU, Pittsburgh and Houston have all put themselves into the AP Top 25 mix, and recent results across that group have offered a reminder that these are not just name-brand opponents but teams capable of swinging games with quarterback play, timely defense and enough depth to make September or later meetups feel bigger than they might look on paper.
BYUs latest win over Iowa State, with Bear Bachmeier steering the offense, is the one that should especially catch UCFs attention because it underscores how quickly a ranked team can dictate terms when the quarterback settles in and the game script tilts its way. Pittsburghs stumble against North Carolina and Houstons win over Kansas State only add to the picture: UCFs future opponents are going to arrive with different strengths, different forms of momentum and plenty to prove, which is exactly what makes that 2026 slate feel dangerous before it even gets here.
