BYU Faces An Early Big 12 Test After Its First Setback

Utah emerges as the sole unbeaten team in the Big 12, while surprising upsets and standout performances shake up the league's power rankings.

Utah is the last unbeaten left in Big 12 play, and the Utes have turned that into the top spot in this week’s league power rankings after another gritty win. There’s no mystery about why they’re there: they keep finding a way.

No. 5 Utah improved to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the conference with a 21-13 win over No.

14 Houston. The turning point came in the fourth quarter when Utah forced a key turnover and converted it into a touchdown, then finished the job by stopping Houston on downs.

Devon Dampier was central to it again, rushing 15 times for 150 yards and two touchdowns. He’s now 17-2 as a starter, and Utah owns the nation’s longest active win streak at 13 games.

The next stop is Cincinnati on Saturday at 1:45 p.m. MT on ESPN.

Right behind the Utes, No. 9 BYU fell in a wild one at UCF, 39-31 in double overtime.

Bear Bachmeier put up big numbers anyway, throwing for 257 yards and two touchdowns while adding another score on the ground. But a tipped interception to end the first half loomed large.

UCF got a pair of former Utah Valley-area connections into the spotlight too, with former BYU commit Landen Chambers scoring twice and former Lehi tight end Grayson Brousseau catching the go-ahead touchdown and two-point conversion in the second overtime. BYU gets Arizona State on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

MT on FOX, and the Cougars’ last win in the series came in 2021 in Provo, 27-17.

Texas Tech took a hit after a messy night at Cincinnati. The Red Raiders were flagged a season-high 12 times for 75 yards and lost three turnovers in a 37-24 defeat.

Will Hammond went 24 of 37 for 227 yards with an interception, while Austin Romaine and Ben Roberts each had 11 tackles. Texas Tech now turns to No.

21 Arizona at home Saturday at 10 a.m. MT on ESPN.

The Red Raiders lead the series 27-5-2 and won the most recent meeting, 28-22 in Tucson in 2024.

Arizona arrives in Lubbock riding the kind of performance that gets people’s attention. Noah Fifita threw for 308 yards and two touchdowns in a 39-3 rout of Iowa State, while Isaiah Mizell opened the game with a 71-yard touchdown catch on the second play from scrimmage. Arizona’s last win over Texas Tech came in 2019, a 28-14 game in Tucson.

Houston dropped to No. 19 after the loss at Utah. Connor Weigman threw for 282 yards, but the Cougars managed just 20 rushing yards from him, and Utah sacked him five times.

Houston is off this week before hosting Cincinnati on Nov. 7.

Cincinnati keeps climbing after the biggest shock of the week. JC French IV threw a career-high four touchdown passes, and Cole Tabb added a career-best 173 rushing yards and a score in the Bearcats’ 37-24 win over No.

8 Texas Tech. It was Cincinnati’s first home win over a top-10 team since 2006, when it beat No.

7 Rutgers 30-11. The Bearcats now get Utah, a team they’ve already seen once - and lost to - last season in Salt Lake City, 45-14.

Oklahoma State also made noise, burying Colorado with a 34-0 second half on the way to a 57-24 win in Stillwater. Drew Mestemaker threw for 386 yards and four touchdowns, and Justin Bowick caught five passes for 138 yards and a score.

The Cowboys head to Iowa State on Saturday at 5 p.m. MT on FS1.

UCF’s win over BYU pushed the Golden Knights up to No. 8.

Keyone Jenkins threw for 293 yards and three touchdowns, and UCF got the fourth-down stop it needed in the second overtime. Freshman Tyren Hornes had six catches for 137 yards.

UCF’s only win in the three-game series with Baylor came in the 2014 Fiesta Bowl.

Arizona State, meanwhile, has some momentum after Cardae Mack ran for 159 yards and four touchdowns in a 28-17 win over Kansas State. The Sun Devils used three quarterbacks in the game: Mikey Keene went 10 of 20 for 160 yards, Cutter Boley was 1 of 5 for seven yards, and freshman Jake Fette went 3 of 6 for 45 yards.

Arizona State faces BYU on Saturday in Provo, with kickoff set for 1:30 p.m. MT on FOX.

The Sun Devils lead the series 21-8 and won last year’s meeting in Tempe, 28-23.

West Virginia checked in at No. 10 after surviving TCU, 24-20. Mike Hawkins Jr. ran for two touchdowns and passed for another, and the Mountaineers sealed it with a key red zone stop in the final minute.

West Virginia is on a bye before heading to Texas Tech on Nov. 7.

Kansas State slips to No. 11 after losing to Arizona State, though Reed Harris had a big night with six catches for 147 yards. With Avery Johnson out injured, Jacob Knuth made his first career start and completed 26 of 41 passes for 194 yards. Kansas State visits Colorado on Saturday at noon MT on TNT, and the Wildcats have won three of the past four in the series.

Iowa State remains stuck at No. 12 after managing only 221 total yards, including 52 on the ground, in the loss to Arizona. Aiden Flora, who ranks ninth nationally in rushing yards per game at 113, was limited to 12 carries for 36 yards. The Cyclones get Oklahoma State next, and they’ve won three of the last four matchups.

TCU sits at No. 13 after a 24-20 loss to West Virginia, despite Jaden Craig throwing for 372 yards and a touchdown and adding a rushing score. Kari Ashby and Jordan Dwyer both topped 100 receiving yards.

TCU hosts Kansas on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. MT on FS1 and has won five straight in the series.

Kansas moved up one spot after hanging on for a 25-24 win against Baylor. Blake Herrod blocked a field goal attempt in the final minute, and Isaiah Marshall’s 15-yard run with 1:13 left put Kansas ahead by one. The Jayhawks travel to TCU on Saturday, and their last win in the series came in 2018, a 27-26 result in Lawrence.

Baylor slid to No. 15 after the one-point loss to Kansas. DJ Lagway threw for 236 yards and a touchdown, and Gavin Freeman had nine catches for 123 yards in the game.

Baylor also made a coaching change Sunday, relieving head coach Dave Aranda of his duties after the loss to Kansas State. The Bears go to UCF on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

MT on ESPN, and Baylor has won the last two meetings between the teams, including a 30-3 win in Waco last season.

Colorado rounds out the rankings at No. 16 after Isaac Wilson went 19 of 27 for 280 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in the loss to Oklahoma State.

Cincinnati Just Helped Expose A Big 12 Problem Nobody Can Ignore

Week 8 turned into a rough reminder of how quickly the Big 12 picture can shift, with BYU and Texas Tech both taking damaging losses just as the conference race was starting to come into focus. Those setbacks matter far beyond a single Saturday, because both teams had been building toward a College Football Playoff push and suddenly have much less room for error. Add in Baylors decision to fire Dave Aranda after a close loss to Kansas, and the league already feels like it is moving in several directions at once.

At the top, Utah is still unbeaten and sitting alone atop the Big 12 after its win over Houston, which only adds to the pressure on the rest of the contenders chasing it. The next round of games now carries even more weight, especially with Arizona and Texas Tech set for a key matchup that could reshape the standings again. For BYU, the lesson is hard to miss: in this league, a bad weekend can change the conversation fast, and the margin between contender and also-ran is getting thinner by the week. [Read more 🡒]

BYU Gets Its Arizona State Rematch With Plenty Still Boiling

When BYU and Arizona State met in that controversial 2024 finish, the game ended with the kind of chaos that tends to linger well beyond the final whistle. Sun Devils fans rushed the field before the last play was reviewed, one second went back on the clock, and BYU still nearly pulled off a comeback with a Hail Mary attempt that had the whole night hanging in the balance. Even now, the meeting feels less like a buried result than a reminder of how quickly a game can turn into a grievance for one side and a rallying point for the other.

The rematch arrives Saturday with both programs carrying very different energy from that night. BYU has kept building since then, while Arizona State has had a rougher stretch and recently turned to a quarterback change with Cutter Boley being benched. Kenny Dillingham has already expressed remorse for how he handled the emotional aftermath of that 2024 game, but the stakes of this one are simple enough without any extra drama: BYU gets a chance to revisit a memory it would rather improve, and Arizona State gets one more shot to make sure the ending is cleaner this time. BYUs Sione Moa Just Put A Brutal Injury Run Behind Him

Sione Moas latest trip back onto the field gave BYU another reason to feel good about its depth in the backfield. After missing five games with a knee injury, Moa returned and found the end zone on a rushing touchdown, a small but meaningful step in a comeback that has taken more than one layer of work to complete.

Moas road back has been especially tough because the same leg had already been through surgery for compartment syndrome and later surgery to repair a torn MCL and PCL. He has leaned on the Cougars medical staff, his teammates, his coaches and his faith through the rehab process, and getting back to production only adds to the sense that one of the teams more resilient players is finally moving past a brutal injury run.
