Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen Just Gave The Sabres A Needed Reset

Amidst a season of struggles, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen seizes a golden opportunity to propel the Sabres to victory in a pivotal game against the Panthers.

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen didn’t enter Monday afternoon as Buffalo’s first choice in net. He left it looking like the best one.

With the Sabres tied 2-2 against the Florida Panthers and in need of a spark, coach Lindy Ruff made the switch after turning to Colten Ellis early. Luukkonen came off the bench and steadied everything, turning away 13 of the 14 shots he faced to help Buffalo pull away for a 5-3 win in front of a sellout crowd of 19,070 at KeyBank Center.

“We got exactly what we needed,” Ruff said. “He made a couple really big saves for us, made a couple great saves late.”

For a Sabres team that had dropped two straight and been outscored 8-1 in those losses, the response came fast. Buffalo opened with its sharpest start of the season, skating with pace, moving the puck cleanly and generating chances early. Josh Doan got it rolling 5:58 into the game when he flew down the right wing and beat Jacob Markstrom from the right circle for his first goal of the season.

“A little bit of relief to just see something go in the net right now … so it was good to see and good to build off,” Doan said. “I think after that we kind of got rolling a bit there.”

The Sabres kept pressing and had an 8-1 shot advantage early. Ruff called it Buffalo’s best opening stretch so far, and he liked what he saw from the way the team attacked loose pucks and supported the play.

“It was our best start,” Ruff said. “Moved the puck well.

We got pucks to the net. We got there for second opportunities.

I think the shots were seven or eight to one after seven or eight minutes. We got to loose pucks, but I thought we skated well, moved to puck well.

And in the six games so far, that was probably our best hockey game.”

Buffalo’s power play, which had gone 0-for-13 to start the season before breaking through in Saturday’s 4-1 loss to the Utah Mammoth, kept the momentum going. Captain Rasmus Dahlin scored on a one-timer 15:55 into the first period, then left early in the second with an upper-body injury.

The Sabres kept answering. Ryan McLeod scored his first goal of the season in the second period, and Noah Ostlund added a power-play goal 7:15 into the third on a crisp sequence of passing to push Buffalo ahead 4-3. Tage Thompson finished things off at 13:20.

Ruff said the decision to pull Ellis wasn’t one he enjoys, but he felt it was necessary after two goals slipped by the young goalie in the first period and another got through on the power play.

“Two pucks went through our goalie again, and just felt that we just needed a save,” Ruff said.

Anton Lundell had tied the game at 1 by beating Ellis through the pads in close, and Sam Reinhart later did the same on the power play after Seth Jones’ point shot leaked through Ellis.

Luukkonen, who said not having much time to think helped him settle in, said the game felt smoother for him once he got going.

“The team played well in front of me and was kind of easy to get into it,” he said.

He also said the comfort came from reading the flow better and settling into his positioning.

“I don’t think it’s a huge thing or any one big thing or anything like that,” he said. “It’s kind of getting comfortable with the flow of the game and the flow of your own game and kind of finding key points, positioning yourself better, giving yourself a better chance to get to the puck. I think it’s something that just comes over time.”

Ruff said Luukkonen has already shown he can work through rough stretches.

“He’s battled ups and downs, and I’ve seen him come out of him and play really well,” Ruff said. “Not easy.

I mean, it’s not easy pulling goalies during a game. It’s not a decision I really like, but we have to … win hockey games.”

The coach also made clear Ellis remains part of the picture while Alex Lyon works back from a shoulder injury.

“He’ll get back in there, he’ll have to battle,” Ruff said. “It’s no different than any other players. You struggle a bit, you got to bounce back and come with a better game.”

Buffalo improved to 3-3-0 as it closed out a five-game homestand, and Luukkonen is likely to get the start Tuesday against the Montreal Canadiens as the Sabres open a three-game road trip. They also play Thursday against the Toronto Maple Leafs and Saturday in Montreal.

For the night, though, the story was simple: Buffalo got the start it wanted, got the saves it needed, and got back in the win column. After Luukkonen stepped in cold, the Sabres never let the Panthers fully take control again.

Sabres Open Road Trip With A Dahlin Problem Ruff Must Solve

Buffalos road trip opens with a lineup wrinkle that lands squarely on the blue line. Rasmus Dahlin is day-to-day, and the Sabres are heading out without their top defenseman as the trip begins, leaving Lindy Ruff with an early personnel decision to sort through before the games start to stack up.

For a team already trying to settle into the rhythm of life away from home, Dahlins absence changes the look and feel of the defense group right away. Ruff has to manage the opening leg without one of his most important players traveling with the team, and the next update on Dahlin will shape how Buffalo handles the rest of the trip. [Read more 🡒]

Sabres Nearly Stole A Point Despite A Growing Problem

Even with Rasmus Dahlin out injured and Matt Grzelcyk on injured reserve, the Sabres found a way to push Montreal all the way to a shootout. Olen Zellweger gave Buffalo a jolt with two goals, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen turned aside 35 shots, and a game that could have slipped away turned into a night where the Sabres were close enough to steal a point.

The bigger concern, though, is how often Buffalo is having to patch together its blue line just to stay afloat. The Canadiens took control in the second period before the Sabres battled back to force overtime, but the defensive absences have become hard to ignore, especially with another roster move needed to cover the gap and keep the group functional. Sabres Injury Uncertainty Is Starting To Put Real Pressure On Buffalo

The Sabres early-season juggling act got a little more complicated this week, with head coach Lindy Ruff offering no significant update on Rasmus Dahlin after the defensemans upper-body injury. Buffalo has already had to lean on lineup changes throughout its 3-3-1 start, and the absence of one of its most important blue-line pieces only adds to the uncertainty around a team still trying to settle in.

The injury list is not easing up, either. Goalie Alex Lyon has hit a slight setback and will be off the ice for a few days, while Tyson Kozak has been sent back to Buffalo for further evaluation, leaving the Sabres to keep adjusting on the fly as the schedule moves on. For a club that has been trying to build some rhythm, the constant shuffling is starting to feel like more than just a short-term inconvenience. [Read more 🡒]
