Tage Thompson Just Gave Sabres Fans A Much Needed Reason To Believe

Tage Thompson's standout performance secures a crucial victory for the Buffalo Sabres against the Los Angeles Kings.

Tage Thompson delivered the finishing touch, and the Buffalo Sabres left Los Angeles with a 3-2 win over the Kings on Saturday at Crypto.com Arena.

Thompson’s second goal of the night came on the power play and broke a 2-2 tie with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation. It was the kind of goal that swung the game at the right moment, and it capped a night in which Thompson also opened the scoring for Buffalo.

Jack Quinn set up Thompson’s first-period goal, giving the Sabres a 1-0 lead at 6:13. Quinn carried the puck along the far wall before feeding Thompson, who beat Kings goalie Anton Forsberg on a shot from the high slot. Corey Perry was penalized for slashing on the play.

Los Angeles answered in the second period. Quinton Byfield scored at 5:34 after a feed from Zach Benson, and Corey Perry later tied it with a power-play goal at 13:16. Perry’s shot from the right circle slipped past Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen after Trevor Moore had passed the puck across to him.

Buffalo had chances to pull away early in the second, including a stop by Forsberg on a one-timer from Alex Tuch. The Kings also created quality looks and outshot the Sabres 4-0 in the first seven minutes of the period, but Buffalo’s defense and Luukkonen held up long enough for the game to stay level.

The Sabres regained control in the third. After a late second-period cross-checking penalty to Rasmus Dahlin expired, Andre Lee tied the game at 2-2 at 1:48 of the third when he finished off a feed from Scott Laughton.

Thompson answered at 14:28, scoring his second of the game off a pass from Quinn and beating Forsberg from the left circle. It was the goal that sealed Buffalo’s third straight win.

Zach Benson added two assists for Buffalo, and Thompson finished with two goals and an assist. The Sabres improved to 1-0 on the road against Pacific Division opponents this season.

Buffalo returns to KeyBank Center for a 7 p.m. game Wednesday against Ottawa, the first game of a four-game homestand.

Lindy Ruff Backed What Tage Thompson Did Late In Buffalo's Win

Late in Buffalos win over the Los Angeles Kings, Tage Thompson gave the Sabres something more than offense to hang onto. After Joel Edmundsons hit on Peyton Krebs along the boards, Thompson stepped in and took a roughing penalty while the game was still hanging in the balance, a reminder that the Sabres are trying to build more than just scoring depth under Lindy Ruff.

Ruff made it clear he had no issue with the response, backing Thompsons choice to stand up for a teammate. Buffalo then had to absorb the pressure and protect the result, and the episode fit neatly into the kind of identity the coach keeps pushing: a team willing to answer when one of its own gets hit. Ducks Can Test Whether Ottawas Hot Offense Hides A Bigger Problem

The Senators are heading into a Western swing with plenty of questions attached to a team that has looked dangerous going forward but uneven everywhere else. Ottawas offense has carried much of the early optimism, with Tim Sttzle and Drake Batherson driving the attack, but the lineup is also dealing with a cluster of injuries that has complicated the picture, including absences or uncertainty around key names such as Warren Foegele, Andre Burakovsky and William Eklund.

For Buffalo, that makes the next few nights worth watching closely even though the Sabres are only one stop on the trip. Ottawas ability to score has not been the issue, and the challenge now is whether the Senators can hold up defensively against a stretch of West Coast games that could expose how much their hot start is masking bigger problems. If they cant tighten things up, this road trip could turn from an opportunity into an early-season reality check. [Read more 🡒]
