Nick Foligno’s night ended early Tuesday in Buffalo after the Minnesota Wild forward left with an upper-body injury.
The team did not say exactly when or where the injury happened, but Foligno had already taken part in one notable collision earlier in the game. Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin powered through an attempted hit from the 38-year-old veteran, a play that stood out in an otherwise brief outing for Foligno.
He skated just 3:29 over five shifts before exiting. Minnesota had carried a 2-0 lead on the road against brother Marcus’ former team, but the Sabres came back, forced overtime and finished off a 3-2 win.
Foligno had appeared in the Wild’s first three games of the season and scored in the club’s opener against the Nashville Predators last Thursday. That goal remains his only point so far in 2026-27. Entering Tuesday, the Buffalo native had a plus/minus of +2 and was averaging 13:11 of ice time per game.
This is Foligno’s first full season in Minnesota. The Wild got him from the Chicago Blackhawks ahead of the trade deadline last March in exchange for future considerations. He finished the 2025-26 regular season with four points in 17 games, then added two goals and an assist in 11 playoff appearances as Minnesota reached the second round before losing to the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Colorado Avalanche.
He re-signed with the Wild this offseason on a one-year deal with a cap hit of $900,000.

Zach Metsa Just Gave The Sabres A Toughness Story Fans Noticed
The Sabres got an early-season reminder that their edge can come from unlikely places, and Zach Metsa supplied it in the opener against Columbus. The defenseman ended up in a fight with Blue Jackets winger Mathieu Olivier, a confrontation that immediately drew attention because of the size gap and because it came in a game that already had a tense feel to it.
Metsas willingness to answer the bell did not go unnoticed inside the room. Lindy Ruff and teammates were quick to point out the value of a player standing up for the group, especially in a moment like that, and it added a little toughness to the Sabres opening-night story that fans tend to remember. Viggo Bjrck Is Giving Jets Fans A Reason To Watch Closely
Week 1 offered an early look at three rookies around the league, and Konsta Helenius gave the Sabres something to file away for later. In a tiny sample, the young center showed the kind of reliability coaches tend to trust quickly, pairing steady puck possession with a composed two-way presence that fit naturally into the flow of the game.
The encouraging part for Buffalo is how much of Heleniuss value came in the details. He was effective in puck battles and on clean exits from the defensive zone, often turning those touches into the first step of a counterattack, and he did enough in limited ice time to keep the organization watching closely as the sample grows. Sabres Fans Will Have Strong Opinions On ESPNs Dahlin-Thompson Debate
ESPNs latest NHL Top 100 list for the 2026-27 season is already giving Sabres fans something to argue about, and it starts right at the top of Buffalos own internal pecking order. Rasmus Dahlin landed inside the leagues upper tier after another strong showing, with the captains all-around game and leadership continuing to make him the face of the franchise, while Tage Thompson remains one of the most intriguing power threats on the roster because of the damage he can do offensively.
The contrast comes down to how each player is being valued. Dahlins ranking feels like a reflection of his steadier two-way impact, while Thompsons spot invites more debate because his scoring touch is undeniable even if his defensive work and faceoff results still leave room for growth. Thats where the conversation gets interesting for Buffalo, because Thompsons best usage could depend on how the Sabres ultimately choose to build around him. [Read more 🡒]
