Three names keep circling the rumor board, but the common thread in Detroit, Washington and Buffalo is pretty simple: teams are talking, and nobody is rushing.
In Detroit, the conversation centers on Dylan Larkin and Simon Edvinsson. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said the Red Wings are still taking calls on both players, but the situation remains unchanged for now. The piece that stands out is what Detroit is asking for in return.
“So the other one everyone’s kind of focused on is Detroit. In the back end of our doubleheader tonight in Calgary.
Dylan Larkin, Simon Edvinsson, we’re told status quo in that situation. Red Wings continue to take calls on both players, and the one thing we have heard is that they have been asking about young centers, either in the NHL or not yet.
There, we’ll see how that situation develops.”
Washington’s name entered the mix through Ivan Miroshnichenko, a young forward who has been given permission by the Capitals to seek a trade. Friedman said the 20th overall pick in 2022 has talent, but simply hasn’t found enough runway in the lineup.
“And there’s one other name potentially to add to trade boards here, and that is Washington’s young forward Ivan Miroshnichenko. He was the 20th overall pick in 2022.
He’s a talented young guy. Played three games this year.
Scored against Montreal, but he just can’t get in the lineup.
He’s been given permission to talk to other teams by the Capitals. Now, what the Capitals have said here is, they have to get a legit return.
They’re not going to put him on waivers. They know he won’t clear.
They will trade him, but the return has to be legitimate. They won’t just do it, Ron, for the sake of doing it.”
In Buffalo, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen said he’s heard the trade chatter, but GM Jarmo Kekalainen told him not to dwell on it. Luukkonen said the message was to stay locked in on what he can control.
“Jarmo came to talk to me and it’s great that he found me and we talked about it,” Luukkonen told The News. “It’s a business and for me, it’s just about playing as well as I can.
It’s great that he acknowledges that he has trust in the goaltending. He was mentioning how good the goaltending was last year, and how you have to keep trying to turn the corner.
Just focus on my own stuff and what is in your control.”
Kekalainen also addressed the situation on WGR Radio on Tuesday, saying Luukkonen was part of the Sabres’ future.

Sabres Pressure Is Building After Jarmo Missed On A Major Trade
The Sabres have spent enough time circling the trade market to make patience feel like a luxury, and the pressure around Jarmo Kekalainen is only growing as those big swings keep coming up empty. Buffalo had reportedly been in the mix for major names, with the goalie search and the hunt for help down the middle both serving as reminders that the club still has clear needs if it wants to push forward.
Now the focus is shifting to what comes next, and the list of possible fixes is getting attention around the league. Robert Thomas, Ryan O'Reilly, Jake DeBrusk and Filip Gustavsson all fit different needs depending on how Buffalo wants to attack the problem, whether that means adding a center, wing depth or goaltending help, but none of those paths are simple and the Sabres still have to find a deal that actually sticks. Sabres Already Face Heat Over Their Risky Goalie Bet
Buffalo had a chance to chase one of the leagues most proven goaltenders, but the Sabres did not push hard enough to land Connor Hellebuyck when rumors tied them to the Jets star. Instead, the front office is leaning into its current group, with Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, Colten Ellis and injured Alex Lyon forming the backbone of the crease picture for now. It is the kind of decision that can look prudent in July and far riskier if the season starts to wobble.
Lindy Ruff is still showing confidence in Luukkonen, saying the Sabres will keep giving him starts as he works to clean up his game. For a team that has spent years trying to stabilize its most important position, the choice to stand pat is already drawing scrutiny, especially with a proven option having been there for the taking. The message from Buffalo is clear enough: they believe internal improvement is the path forward, even if the outside noise suggests they may be gambling more than they should. [Read more 🡒]
Sabres Were In The Hellebuyck Hunt Until One Sticking Point Emerged
According to Elliotte Friedman, the Sabres were part of the group of teams that poked around on Connor Hellebuyck before the deal market moved on. Florida, Utah and Carolina were also in the mix, which underscores just how much interest there was in the goaltender and how many different paths clubs explored before talks started to run into trouble.
In Buffalos case, the push never got past the key sticking points that can sink a blockbuster long before it gets serious. Friedman said negotiations with multiple teams hit different walls, from package disagreements to draft-pick swaps, timing and contractual complications, and in Buffalos situation the Jets were also looking for forwards they simply could not land to their satisfaction.
