Sabres Suddenly Have A Rangers Trade Angle Fans Will Watch

The New York Rangers are exploring trade options for goaltending reinforcements as they navigate a promising start to the season marred by crucial injuries.

The Rangers’ injury mess has pushed goaltending to the front of the line, and the search for help appears to be active.

New York has opened the 2026-27 NHL regular season at 7-3-1, but the early success has come with a depleted roster. President and general manager Chris Drury is now facing the kind of depth problem that can force a team to get creative fast, especially in goal.

That need became clearer when Joonas Korpisalo, the No. 2 coming out of training camp, went down with a mysterious injury just days into the season and landed on IR. Dylan Garand then cleared waivers and was recalled from the Hartford Wolf Pack to step in as Igor Shesterkin’s backup. Not long after that, Garand was pushed into the starter’s job when Shesterkin suffered a lower-body injury that is expected to keep him out for the rest of the season.

According to Elliotte Friedman on the latest episode of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, the Rangers have been scouting two goaltenders: Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen of the Buffalo Sabres and Karel Vejmelka of the Utah Mammoth.

Friedman also said Rangers goalie scout Scott Clemmensen was in Calgary recently, and suggested that trip may have been tied to Anaheim Ducks goalie Ville Husso.

“I heard he was in Calgary last week when Anaheim was there. So, he was maybe looking at (Ville Husso), but the Ducks don’t have a lot of depth in goal. So, I don’t know if I see that,” said Friedman.

He added that Clemmensen may also have been taking in some of the AHL games in Calgary, as New York continues to work through every possible option to add goaltending depth.

Of the names Friedman mentioned, Husso would be the cleanest fit from a contract standpoint. He is set to become a free agent after the 2026-27 season, so there would be no long-term commitment for the Rangers to take on.

The bigger complication is the money already tied up in the position. The Rangers have significant term committed in goal, which makes Luukkonen, who is under contract through 2029, and Vejmelka, who is signed through 2030, harder asks.

For now, the only organizational depth move has been James Reimer, who signed a PTO with Hartford to give the team another veteran option in the system.

Sabres Frustration Is Boiling Over As One Bigger Problem Emerges

The Sabres uneven start took another hit with a 3-1 loss to the Flyers, a result that left Buffalo at 4-4-2 and searching for the kind of complete game that has been missing far too often. The offense has not finished well enough, the special teams have lagged, and the overall frustration is starting to pile up because the problems are showing up in more than one area at once.

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonens play has become a central concern as the losses mount, and the goaltending issues are now hard to separate from the broader slump. Even so, there has been at least one steady presence amid the inconsistency, with Jack Quinn standing out as Buffalos most dependable player so far and continuing to give the lineup a needed spark. Sabres Face A Trade Choice That Could Define Their Ambition

Early-season chatter has already linked the Sabres to a few meaningful roster upgrades, and the conversations point to the kind of decision that says plenty about where Buffalo thinks it stands. Columbus has emerged as a team worth watching in the trade market, with the Blue Jackets open to offers and Buffalo mentioned among the clubs keeping tabs on the situation as the Sabres continue searching for help in goal or down the middle.

What makes this more interesting for Buffalo is the type of target being discussed. A proven goaltender such as Connor Hellebuyck or a first-line center like Dylan Larkin would obviously change the look of the roster, but those are the sorts of swings that come with cost, cap implications and long-term consequence. For a Sabres team still trying to prove it is ready to move from interesting to formidable, the next move could reveal just how aggressive management is willing to be. [Read more 🡒]

Sabres Face One Big Question As Hellebuyck Rumors Heat Up

Connor Hellebuycks name keeps circling back to Buffalo as the Sabres continue to search for more certainty in net. Their goaltending has been a concern this season, and that has only fueled the belief that the organization could still be in the market for a major move if the right opportunity presents itself.

The timing is getting harder to ignore, too. Hellebuycks suspension ends Friday, and the chatter around a possible deal has only grown louder as the Jets are said to be looking for a hefty return. Buffalo has already explored this path once, so the question now is whether the price finally comes into range or whether the gap between the two sides remains too wide to close. [Read more 🡒]
