Sabres Suddenly Have A Jiri Kulich Concern They Didn't Expect

With Dylan Larkin's trade possibilities still uncertain and injuries affecting key players, the NHL trade landscape may see significant shifts in the coming days.

If Dylan Larkin ever decides to widen his options, the Montreal Canadiens are already on the radar in Detroit.

TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reported that the Red Wings have been actively scouting the Canadiens, and Detroit Director of Professional Scouting Kris Draper is at tonight’s game between Montreal and the Chicago Blackhawks. The idea, at least for now, is simple: be ready if Larkin changes his mind.

That remains a big if. Larkin has not moved off his stance in the Canadian market. He initially named the Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild and Vegas Golden Knights, then expanded the list to include the Carolina Hurricanes, Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, New Jersey Devils, Tampa Bay Lightning, Utah Mammoth and Washington Capitals.

The hurdle is obvious. Every team on that list is tight to the cap and would need a money-in, money-out deal to make anything work. Still, Larkin got a warm reception in Detroit’s first game in Montreal this season, and if the Canadiens end up on his list, a deal is expected to come together quickly.

Detroit’s night-to-night concerns also got bigger last night in Vancouver. Starting goalie John Gibson left the Red Wings’ game against the Canucks with an upper-body injury, and because Detroit is in the middle of a Pacific Division road trip, there may not be much clarity for a few days.

Gibson’s exit opened the door for Michal Postava to make his NHL debut. He stopped seven of eight shots in relief.

In Florida, the Panthers had their own injury scare in last night’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Defenseman Gustav Forsling left early after taking a puck to the face, according to team reporter Jameson Olive. The Panthers don’t play again until Sunday, so more should be known after practice tomorrow.

Buffalo is also waiting on an update. Bill Hoppe of Buffalo Hockey reported that Sabres forward Jiri Kulich is questionable for the road trip after getting injured in practice.

Hoppe said Kulich took a puck to the face during a power-play drill. Kulich has one goal and three points in eight games this season.

Alex Tuch Just Twisted The Knife On A Sensitive Sabres Issue

Alex Tuch may be in Washington now, but he still had plenty to say about Buffalos uneasy start to the 2026-27 season. The former Sabres winger sounded confident the group will figure things out, even as the early results have left the club hovering around .500 and searching for traction in a crowded Atlantic Division race.

Tuch also drifted into one of those off-ice details that only lands if you know the room, mentioning the Sabres poker games and the way Peyton Krebs handles the bookkeeping. It was a small aside, but an oddly revealing one for a team still trying to steady itself after Tuchs departure, with the kind of lingering familiarity that makes every comment from an ex-teammate feel just a little more pointed. Sabres Keep Creating The Same Problem That Could Sink This Season

The Sabres keep giving themselves the same steep climb, and it showed again in a recent loss to the Flyers. Buffalo has repeatedly fallen behind by two or more goals early this season, forcing the kind of recovery effort that can energize a team for a while but still leaves little margin for error over 60 minutes.

There has been some resilience in the way the Sabres have pushed back after those rough starts, but the bigger issue is obvious enough for Lindy Ruff and his staff: this group needs more offense earlier and a better opening stretch if it wants to stop digging holes. Until that changes, every slow start will keep turning into a test of survival, and that is no way to spend a season. [Read more 🡒]

Sabres Just Made Their Crease Problem Even Harder To Ignore

The Sabres had a chance to make a real swing in goal, but instead watched Connor Hellebuyck land with the Devils in a deal built around Dawson Mercer, Nico Daws, Alexander Command, Nick Bjugstad and two draft picks. Buffalo reportedly never pushed its offer higher after early talks with Winnipeg stalled, a choice that keeps the focus right back where it was: on a crease that already looked unsettled.

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonens early struggles have only sharpened the concern, and Devon Levis offseason move to Edmonton thinned the depth chart even further. With limited internal answers and no obvious prospect ready to step in soon, the Sabres are left trying to solve one of the sports most important positions without much help on the horizon.
