The Sabres are giving Jiri Kulich a different kind of look this preseason, and tonight’s road game against the Detroit Red Wings could put him right in the middle of the action.
Buffalo plans to move Kulich around the lineup during exhibition play, but for at least part of this one, the Czech forward is expected to center the top line with Konsta Helenius and Noah Ostlund. Kulich missed most of last season while recovering from a blood clot, and this preseason is shaping up as a chance to see how he fits in a few different spots.
He has already spent some of training camp on the wing, but the Sabres seem intent on testing his versatility. Kulich, 22, flanked by Helenius, 20, and Ostlund, 22, gives Buffalo a line built around three young, skilled players with plenty of upside.
“Playing with a couple guys that are goal scorers and playmakers, just see how that looks,” Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said this morning in KeyBank Center. “There’s going to be a lot of pieces that probably move around.
I like the job he did. But the plan all along was to get him up and play in some different spots.”
Kulich liked the idea, too, and said both Helenius and Ostlund bring something special to the table.
Kulich said Helenius and Ostlund both possess a hockey IQ that’s on “another level.”
“Having those two guys on the same line, it’s just getting me more excited,” he said.
Another name to watch tonight is Gavin McCarthy, who is set to make his NHL preseason debut. The Clarence native, 21, spent three seasons at Boston University before turning pro and joining the Rochester Americans late last year.
At 6-foot-2 and 198 pounds, McCarthy has already caught Ruff’s attention.
“He’s got a good handle on the game, he’s got some physicality to him,” he said. “I’ve liked his camp so far, so I think he’s a guy that you look at getting some experience. He’s a guy that should be able to play at some point.”
Ruff also said Alex Lyon will start in goal and Colten Ellis will back him up.
