Sabres Make A Long-Term Bet On A Defenseman Fans Barely Know

Buffalo Sabres make a strategic move by locking in the towering and promising defenseman Louis Crevier with a new four-year deal.

The Buffalo Sabres locked up Louis Crevier on a four-year extension worth a $4MM average annual value, keeping the defenseman in the fold through the end of his twenties before he has even played a regular-season game for the club.

Crevier, 25, was on track to become a restricted free agent this summer and was also eligible for arbitration. Instead, Buffalo moved early on a player it clearly believes can become part of its blue line picture for the long haul.

The 6’8″, 238-pound right-shot defender came to the Sabres in the blockbuster summer deal that sent Bowen Byram and Jordan Greenway to Chicago in exchange for a package of assets led by the No. 4 overall pick. In the shadow of that kind of headline trade, Crevier was easy to overlook. But he wasn’t just a throw-in.

He had just put together a strong rookie season for the Blackhawks and entered the trade as a young defenseman with real value of his own. A 2020 seventh-round pick, Crevier turned into a notable development win for Chicago after spending nearly two full seasons with the Rockford IceHogs in the AHL. By the time he reached his mid-twenties, he was ready for a regular NHL role.

Last season, he posted seven goals and 25 points in 78 games while averaging 17:08 of ice time per night, including 1:55 on the penalty kill. For a player his size, the skill set stands out. Crevier brings rare bulk to the back end, but he also moves the puck well enough to separate himself from the usual crop of towering defensemen.

That matters for Buffalo, which already made a clear attempt to add size on defense last season. The Sabres paid a significant price to bring in Logan Stanley and Luke Schenn from Winnipeg, including prospect Isak Rosen and a second-round pick among other pieces. But neither player won over head coach Lindy Ruff, in part because both had issues handling the puck.

Crevier gives Buffalo a different kind of big defenseman. He brings the size the Sabres were chasing, but without the same puck-moving limitations that made Stanley and Schenn hard to trust. He now looks positioned to spend the season in Buffalo’s top four, with the possibility of lining up next to franchise defenseman Rasmus Dahlin or 2021 No. 1 overall pick Owen Power.

Buffalo is betting that this contract will age well. Given how quickly salaries are rising around the league, the Sabres may well look back on a $4MM AAV for Crevier as a bargain by the time the extension begins.

Sabres Just Sent A Big Message About Their Blue Line Plans

The Sabres have already made one of their clearest statements of the offseason on the blue line, locking up defenseman Louis Crevier before he has even played a regular-season game in Buffalo. Crevier arrived from Chicago in the trade that sent Bowen Byram and the No. 4 pick the other way, and the early extension suggests the Sabres are not treating him as a depth add. They are counting on him to be part of the long-term picture after he had 134 NHL games and 32 points with the Blackhawks.

What makes the move especially notable is the timing, with Buffalo committing so quickly to a player who is still new to the organization. Crevier is expected to step into a prominent role right away, and the extension only sharpens the sense that the Sabres see him as more than a stopgap on the back end. The bigger question now is how far the team is willing to go in reshaping its defense around that belief. [Read more 🡒]

Lindy Ruff Is Sending A Clear Early Message To The Sabres

Lindy Ruff is making it clear the Sabres cannot afford to let their 2026-27 season drift out of the starting gate. With the opener against the Columbus Blue Jackets looming, Buffalos coach has put an early emphasis on establishing a strong start, a message that fits a team trying to set a better tone from the outset and avoid playing catch-up right away.

The timing also comes as the blue line continues to take shape, with Louis Creviers recent four-year extension signaling the organizations belief in his development after the Bowen Byram trade. Crevier figures to be part of the defensive conversation quickly, and Buffalos early-season plans will be worth watching as the Sabres sort out how their new-look back end settles in around him. Why Sabres Fans Should Believe Konsta Helenius Is Built For This

Konsta Helenius has already shown the kind of poise that tends to matter most when the games get bigger and the spotlight gets hotter.
