Sam Carrick has quickly become a standout addition for the Buffalo Sabres since the 2026 trade deadline, energizing their fourth line with a much-needed boost. However, his status for the Stanley Cup Playoffs is now in question after he injured his arm during a bout with Anders Lee of the New York Islanders.
Head coach Lindy Ruff announced that Carrick is listed as week-to-week with an upper-body injury, but there's still hope he could return for the playoffs. With less than two weeks remaining in the regular season, the Sabres are gearing up for their first playoff appearance since 2011, set to begin shortly after their final game against the Dallas Stars on April 15.
Carrick has made a significant impact since being acquired from the New York Rangers, tallying six points-five goals and one assist-in just 13 games. His prowess in faceoffs has been a game-changer for Buffalo, who previously struggled in this area, as he has won 57.3% of his draws.
Stepping in for Carrick is Josh Dunne, who will skate alongside Jordan Greenway and Beck Malenstyn. Dunne, a product of Clarkson University, hasn't been a major offensive contributor so far, with just four points in 31 games. However, he brings solid faceoff skills with a 53.1% win rate this season, which could help stabilize the line.
The Sabres' fourth line had been struggling before Carrick's arrival, but his combination with Malenstyn and Zach Benson had recently turned things around. Dunne's last appearance was in a victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on March 5, so it'll be intriguing to see how the line adapts in Carrick's absence.
As for the Sabres' promising prospect, Konsta Helenius, fans are eager for his return after he notched four points in nine games earlier this season. However, the Sabres' management is cautious about bringing him back too soon. Playing Helenius would activate the first year of his entry-level contract, which the team hopes to delay until the 2026-27 season to maintain salary flexibility.
Helenius has been thriving in the AHL with the Rochester Americans, racking up 55 points in 54 games. While he's a top candidate for a call-up if the Sabres face a scoring shortage, the team is balancing immediate needs with long-term cap considerations, especially with Alex Tuch's potential high-dollar extension looming.
Buffalo's playoff aspirations are high, and while Carrick's injury is a setback, the team is poised to adapt and make the most of their upcoming postseason run.
