The Buffalo Sabres have already found a couple of ways to win through four games: comeback mode and late pushes. What they have not found is a penalty kill that can keep them out of trouble.
Through their first quartet of games, Buffalo’s PK sits at 63.6%, which leaves them 28th in the league. That number has been the glaring problem in a start that has otherwise produced two wins and a .500 record. If the Sabres want to avoid digging a hole in October or November, this is the area that needs to turn around fast.
The issue showed up right away in the season opener, a 6-3 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Buffalo gave up two power-play goals in that game, including one late in the first period that pushed Columbus ahead 2-1. The Sabres never recovered after that.
The lone bright spot so far came in a victory over the Blackhawks, the only game this season in which Buffalo did not allow a power-play goal.
That stands in sharp contrast to what the Sabres were doing not long ago. Less than six months ago, they were killing penalties at an 81.9% clip, good for fourth in the league. The personnel behind that success has changed, and the absences are hard to ignore.
Alex Tuch and Jordan Greenway are no longer on the roster, and both mattered in the role. Tuch was a disruptive presence up front when Buffalo was shorthanded, with nine shorthanded goals over the last two years and a style that forced opposing power plays to feel pressure. Greenway, when healthy, was another important piece, bringing physical play and a heavy hit count to the unit.
Zach Benson gives the Sabres some of that edge with his forecheck, but he is smaller than Greenway and may not bring the same penalty-killing instincts.
Buffalo does have options on the blue line, though, and that group could be part of the fix. The Sabres have depth among defensemen, and Louis Crevier has already made an impression early with six blocked shots. The defenseman arrived in a trade from the Chicago Blackhawks and has been one of the team’s early bright spots.
Still, one defenseman alone will not solve it. The Sabres need more players stepping into the kill with the kind of aggression that made the unit effective last season. If they can get that part of their game back, it could help everything else start to click too.

Sabres Goalie Situation Could Force A Bigger Roster Move
The Sabres goaltending picture already looks crowded, and it could get even busier if Buffalo follows through on its reported interest in Connor Hellebuyck. With three goalies currently on the roster, adding a player of that caliber would not just raise the ceiling in net, it would force the front office to make some uncomfortable decisions about how to clear room.
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Alex Lyon would be the names to watch if Buffalo has to turn over the depth chart, and there should be no shortage of possible landing spots around the league. Teams such as the Rangers, Devils and Kings all have their own goalie questions, which gives the Sabres some potential trade flexibility if they decide to keep pushing on the bigger move. Sabres Need These 3 To Respond After Their Worst Performance Yet
After getting blanked 4-0 by Dallas, Buffalo heads into its meeting with Utah looking for a cleaner response and a little more push from the players who can set the tone quickly. Colten Ellis, Josh Doan and Konsta Helenius all sit in the spotlight for different reasons, and the Sabres could use something steadier in goal, a sharper edge at forward and more from a rookie trying to carve out a larger role.
Ellis is in line for the start as the team waits on Alex Lyons shoulder injury to heal, which only adds to the pressure on Buffalos goaltending picture. Doans night has an extra layer too, since he is facing the club that brought him in during the 2025 offseason, while Helenius is trying to turn promise into more consistent impact as the Sabres look to shake off one of their roughest outings of the season. Lindy Ruff Sends A Clear Message With Sabres Lineup Shakeup
The Sabres are making a noticeable change in net for their upcoming matchup with the Utah Mammoth, turning to Colten Ellis instead of Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. Ellis earned the look after helping Buffalo to a recent victory, while Luukkonen has been in a rough stretch in his starts, giving Lindy Ruff a reason to try a different voice and a different feel at the position.
Ruff is not stopping there. Buffalo also plans to add Tyson Kozak and Sam Carrick into the lineup in an effort to inject some energy and tighten the group ahead of another important game. It reads like a clear message from the coach: the Sabres want more pace, more push and a sharper edge from the players stepping in. [Read more 🡒]
