Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen is sitting on the edge of a handful of Sabres milestones, but whether he actually gets the chance to chase them may depend on what Buffalo does next.
The biggest shadow hanging over his future is the same one that’s followed him all offseason: the Sabres’ reported connection to Connor Hellebuyck. If that move turns into reality, Luukkonen’s run in Buffalo would almost certainly be over. For now, though, he’s still in position to keep building on a career season that looked like a real breakthrough in the regular season, even if the playoffs told a much rougher story.
Luukkonen, a second-round pick by Buffalo in the 2017 NHL Draft, gave the Sabres plenty to like over 34 regular-season starts. He finished 22-9-3 with a .909 save percentage and a career-best 2.52 goals-against average.
Then came the playoffs, where things went sideways. In six postseason games, Luukkonen went 3-3 with a 3.18 goals-against average and an .876 save percentage. That downturn is part of why Buffalo has explored trade options to address the position.
If Luukkonen stays put, the next season could become a meaningful one in the franchise record book. He currently has 190 career games played, 185 starts and 93 wins. Reaching 200 games played and 200 starts would put him in rare company, and getting to 100 wins would push him further up the Sabres’ all-time list.
If he gets to 200 games played, he would become the ninth player to do it for Buffalo and the first since Ryan Miller, who owns the franchise record with 540. The same goes for starts: Luukkonen would be the eighth Sabre to hit that mark and the first since Miller. And if he reaches 100 wins, he would climb to seventh in team history, moving past Daren Puppa, though Bob Sauve’s 119 would still be ahead of him.
The wrinkle is that Buffalo went with a three-goalie rotation last season, and unless the Sabres make that Hellebuyck move, it looks like that approach could be back. It’s an unusual setup, and it brings its own headaches when it comes to balancing games and practice time so nobody gets stale.

The Flames have reason to listen if they decide to keep leaning into a rebuild, but for now the situation remains one to watch rather than a finished deal, which leaves Buffalo waiting to see whether the price and timing ever line up. Sabres Offense Has A Real Chance To Make A Bigger Jump
Buffalos offense already took a meaningful step last season, finishing fifth in the NHL in goals, but the bigger takeaway might be how much room there still is for it to grow. The Sabres did most of their damage without a long list of high-end finishers, and this years group is banking on more from a wave of young forwards such as Zach Benson, Jiri Kulich, Noah Ostlund and Konsta Helenius to help spread the scoring around even more.
Josh Doan, Helenius and Kulich also figure into a power-play picture that could become a difference-maker if it sharpens up. The Sabres drew plenty of penalties and still have enough skill up front to push the attack higher, but the real question is whether their young core can turn all that opportunity into the kind of consistent production that makes the offense look less one-dimensional.
