The Buffalo Sabres are gearing up for a boost post-Olympic break with the anticipated return of center Josh Norris and goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. Head coach Lindy Ruff confirmed their availability for the upcoming road trip, which includes matchups against the New Jersey Devils, Florida Panthers, and Tampa Bay Lightning.
While it's still uncertain which specific games will see Norris and Luukkonen back in action, their return is expected during this three-game stretch. Norris has been sidelined since January 14th due to a rib injury sustained in a game against the Philadelphia Flyers.
Initially deemed day-to-day, the injury extended to a week-to-week recovery, landing Norris on injured reserve. Despite missing a significant portion of the 2025-26 season, Norris has been effective when healthy, tallying six goals and 11 assists in 19 games.
Luukkonen, on the other hand, missed the last five games before the break with a lower-body injury from a game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Like Norris, his injury status shifted from day-to-day to week-to-week, causing him to miss the 2026 Olympics, where he was slated to represent Finland. Luukkonen has been a reliable part of the Sabres’ goaltending trio, boasting an 11-7-2 record and a .903 save percentage over 21 games.
The Sabres are in a good position roster-wise, with room to activate both players without making additional moves, as they currently have 21 players on the roster.
However, winger Zach Benson won't be joining the team on this road trip. Benson, who is having a standout season with seven goals and 19 assists in 42 games, is still recovering from an upper-body injury suffered just before the break. His absence will be felt, but the Sabres are hopeful for his return soon.
As the Sabres hit the road, the potential return of Norris and Luukkonen could provide the spark they need to make a strong push in the latter part of the season. Fans will be eager to see how these reinforcements impact the team’s dynamics and performance.
