Jessica Pegula says her life in sports may not end when her tennis career does.
In a recent interview with CNBC Sport, the world’s third-ranked women’s tennis player said she has long imagined staying in the sporting world after tennis. “I always thought that I wanted to be in the sporting world when I was done with tennis,” Jessica Pegula told CNBC Sport.
For Pegula, that future could include the Buffalo Bills, the NFL team owned by her parents, Terry and Kim Pegula. Her mother and father also own the National Hockey League’s Buffalo Sabres and National Lacrosse League’s Buffalo Bandits.
This is not the first time Pegula has pointed to a possible role with the Bills and Sabres. In February 2024, as part of a column published by The Players’ Tribune that revealed her path into cardiac arrest in June 2022, Jessica wrote, “My mom always wanted me to be involved. She wanted me to learn and eventually do what she was doing.”
That possibility became more real after her father’s cardiac arrest, which kept him from returning to his role as president of both teams. Laura Pegula, Jessica’s daughter from her first marriage, became more involved with the Bills and Sabres. Jessica’s husband, Taylor Gahagen, who was named to the now-defunct Pegula Sports and Entertainment’s director of corporate development in 2024, was let go that year.
Now, Laura attends NFL and NHL league meetings, including a role as one of the Sabres’ two alternate governors, and regularly appears at events for both teams. Jessica’s younger brother, Matthew, has frequented games and practices for both teams since the Pegula family purchased the Sabres and Bills in 2011 and 2014, respectively.
Jessica is no stranger to the biggest stages in tennis. According to the Women’s Tennis Association, she is the third-ranked singles player in the world.
As a doubles player, she has been ranked as high as first. She has won 11 singles titles and seven doubles titles on the WTA Tour.
At 31, she remains near the top of her game. In January, she reached the semifinals at the Australian Open.
She got to the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open semifinals on Sept.
And she made clear that what happens after tennis is still on her mind. “I think we learned that after what happened with my mom, that you never know,” Pegula also told CNBC Sport.

Former Sabres Just Revived A Brutal Question For Buffalo
The first night of the 2026-27 NHL season served up an uncomfortable reminder for Buffalo, with a cluster of former Sabres immediately making an impact elsewhere. Jordan Greenway got on the board for the Chicago Blackhawks, JJ Peterka scored for the Boston Bruins, and Jack Eichel and Victor Olofsson each found the net for the Vegas Golden Knights, a sharp start that put a familiar ex-Sabres problem back in focus.
For Buffalo, the bigger issue is not just that these players moved on, but that they wasted no time looking at home in their new sweaters. Eichels and Olofssons goals came in Vegas, while Greenway and Peterka added theirs in separate debuts that only deepened the sense that the Sabres are still carrying around the same old question about talent development and what happens after players leave Western New York. Sabres Already Face An Opening Night Blue Line Problem
The Sabres are heading into the season with an early blue line question before they even get through opening night. Buffalos defense was already under a spotlight, and now the team has to start the year without Olen Zellweger, who is dealing with concussion protocol at the worst possible time for a group trying to find its footing right away.
There is at least some hope the absence does not stretch long. Zellweger could be back in time for Saturdays home opener against Chicago, which would give Buffalo a quick boost if he clears in time. Until then, the Sabres will have to manage the opener shorthanded on defense while other teams in the division are already dealing with their own injury news, including the Islanders waiting on Mathew Barzal and the Blackhawks being without Andrew Mangiapane. Jack Quinn Already Has Major Stakes In Buffalos Fast Start
Buffalos fast start has only sharpened the attention on Jack Quinn, who enters the season with more than just another step in his development at stake. The Sabres have plenty of young skill up front, but Quinn sits in a particularly important spot because his current deal expires after the season, making every productive night part of a larger conversation about where he fits in the teams long-term plans.
Quinn showed last season that he can handle a bigger role, and the Sabres are clearly counting on him to keep building from there. Elsewhere on the roster picture, Mattias Samuelsson is still working his way back and has not been ruled out for the opener, while Olen Zellweger remains in concussion protocol. The organization also added some veteran depth on the blue line, with AHL affiliate Rochester bringing in Zack Hayes on a professional tryout. [Read more 🡒]
