Chris Pronger Stuns Fans with Insightful Take on Buffalo Sabres' Big Challenge

Hockey legend Chris Pronger questions whether the red-hot Buffalo Sabres can solidify their defense as they push for a deep playoff run.

Hall of Fame defenseman Chris Pronger, with his wealth of big-game experience, is someone worth listening to when it comes to playoff hockey. The six-time NHL All-Star, who played a pivotal role in the Anaheim Ducks' 2007 Stanley Cup victory and Team Canada's Olympic golds in 2002 and 2010, shared his thoughts on the Buffalo Sabres’ impressive rise in the Eastern Conference.

During a recent SiriusXM NHL Network Radio appearance, Pronger described the Sabres as an "exciting team to watch." However, he expressed some skepticism about their postseason readiness.

"The big question mark is whether they can win a 2-1 game," Pronger noted. "They've been scoring a lot, but can they lock it down defensively when it matters?"

He acknowledged their ability to shut down games, as seen in a recent victory over Tampa, but remained cautious about their defensive consistency in playoff scenarios.

The Sabres are lighting up the scoreboard, ranking fourth in the NHL for goals per game at 3.51. Yet, defensively, they sit 14th in goals against per game at 3.02. Their goalies, Alex Lyon and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, have been stellar, combining for a fifth-best save percentage of .906.

Digging deeper into the stats, the Sabres are 25th in expected goals allowed per 60 minutes (3.42) and 23rd in high-danger chances given up per hour (12.79), according to Natural Stat Trick. This suggests a need for defensive improvement, potentially bolstered by recent additions like Logan Stanley and Luke Schenn, and the hopeful return of Conor Timmins from injury.

Head coach Lindy Ruff, who returned to the Sabres after stints with the Dallas Stars and New Jersey Devils, faces the challenge of balancing this high-octane offense with a more solid defense. Two seasons ago, under Don Granato, the Sabres missed the playoffs by a single point and tried to shift to a more defensively responsible style. This move, however, saw them lose their attacking edge, resulting in a seven-point drop in the standings and another missed postseason.

Ruff's comeback hasn't been without its hurdles, but the Sabres have been on a tear recently, posting a 29-5-2 record since December 9. This surge has propelled them from the bottom of the East to second place, just two points shy of the Carolina Hurricanes for the top spot and four points ahead of the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Atlantic Division.

The Sabres’ transformation from a struggling team to a potential Stanley Cup contender has been remarkable. Ruff, a leading candidate for the Jack Adams Award, is navigating the fine line between seeking defensive improvements and maintaining their current success.

Buffalo is riding high on an eight-game winning streak, which has quelled any concerns following the NHL's break for the 2026 Winter Olympics. While Pronger’s defensive concerns are valid, the Sabres' performance over the past few months suggests they’re more than just a flash in the pan. This could be the start of something special for Buffalo fans.
