The Buffalo Sabres have made a strategic move by recalling defenseman Zach Metsa from their AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans. This decision comes just before their next game on Wednesday, aligning with the Americans' schedule, meaning Metsa wouldn't see additional ice time if left in the AHL.
Metsa, an undrafted gem, is enjoying the best season of his professional career. At 27, he's steadily climbed the ranks since his college days, where he led Quinnipiac University to a national championship in 2022-23. His development in the AHL has been impressive, jumping from 24 points in 54 games during his rookie year to 46 points in 69 games the following season.
This year, Metsa has notched 15 points in just 16 games, earning him a spot on the Sabres' NHL roster. Though his average ice time is just under 10 minutes per game, he's appeared in 26 NHL contests. The challenge now is for Metsa to gain more trust from head coach Lindy Ruff, which could lead to a larger role.
His current contract, a two-year deal signed last July, offers the Sabres a potential bargain. With one season remaining at a $775K NHL salary and $325K total guarantee, Metsa could provide excellent value if he becomes a reliable third-pairing or No. 7 defenseman. His cap-friendly hit is a boon for a team looking to maximize its roster under budget constraints.
When Metsa was sent down on February 6, he was joined by forwards Konsta Helenius and Isak Rosén. While neither has been recalled yet, their strong performances in the AHL suggest they may not remain in Rochester for long. Keep an eye on these young talents as the season progresses; their return could be on the horizon.
