The Buffalo Sabres are making moves on the blue line, calling up defenseman Zac Jones from the Rochester Americans following an injury to Jacob Bryson in their recent game against the Canadiens.
This isn’t Jones’ first trip up to the NHL roster this season, but it could be his most promising. While he’s been summoned before, he’s still waiting to make his regular-season debut with Buffalo. With Bryson sidelined, the door may finally be opening for Jones to step onto NHL ice and show what he can do.
And based on his play in Rochester, he’s more than earned the shot.
Jones has been one of the AHL’s most productive defensemen this season, putting up 37 points in 32 games - including six goals and a league-leading 31 assists (tied). That kind of offensive output from the back end doesn’t just happen by accident. He’s been a driving force for the Amerks, quarterbacking the power play, pushing the pace in transition, and creating offense with poise and vision.
His standout play hasn’t gone unnoticed either. Jones was recently named to the 2026 AHL All-Star Game, a nod to just how impactful he’s been at the minor league level.
Now, the question becomes whether that success can translate to the NHL. The Sabres are in need of depth on the back end, and Jones brings a different element - a puck-moving, offensive-minded defenseman who can skate and make plays under pressure. If he gets the chance, he could bring a spark to Buffalo’s blue line.
For Jones, this call-up isn’t just another trip up the Thruway - it’s an opportunity. And if his AHL performance is any indication, he might be ready to take full advantage.
