Buffalo Sabres Rope in a Victory Against the Kings
In Los Angeles, the Buffalo Sabres have been riding high with a mantra that’s resonating through their locker room: “Everybody ropes, everyone rides.” This philosophy was on full display as they took down the Los Angeles Kings, 4-1, at Crypto.com Arena.
Tage Thompson, the Sabres' alternate captain, summed it up perfectly: “There’s no job too big or small. When everyone’s doing those gritty, unglamorous things, it shows your teammates you’re all in. That energy is contagious.”
The pivotal moment came with under nine minutes left in a deadlocked game. Kings defenseman Joel Edmundson aimed to check Zach Benson, but Benson deftly passed the puck to Sam Carrick, who seized the moment and netted a backhand goal. This marked Carrick’s fifth goal in eight games, sealing the win for Buffalo.
“Teams seem to target Benson,” Carrick noted, “but he’s unfazed and makes those plays that shift the game’s momentum.”
Thompson, who also scored his 36th goal, praised the team’s selflessness: “We’re a group that sacrifices for each other. Those plays add up.”
Despite a challenge from the Kings claiming a high stick by Benson, the goal stood. Rasmus Dahlin extended the lead on a power play, and Benson capped it off with an empty-netter, pushing Buffalo’s road point streak to an impressive 13 games (12-0-1).
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen was solid in net, stopping 26 of 27 shots. The lone Kings goal came from Artemi Panarin on a power play, ending Buffalo’s 175:41 shutout streak.
“They didn’t create many threats outside their power play,” Luukkonen said. “Our defense and forwards tracked back well. It’s a complete team effort, and it’s showing on the scoreboard.”
The Kings managed only 19 shots at even strength, with Buffalo’s defense swiftly transitioning the puck up the ice, frustrating the Kings’ forecheck.
Sam Carrick was full of praise for the defense: “Our D-men are incredible at breaking out. They read the forecheck and escape pressure efficiently, which disrupts the opposing team’s rhythm.”
Buffalo’s defensive prowess has been a cornerstone of their success, allowing just 1.92 goals per game since the Olympic break. This formula is setting them up well for the playoffs.
Carrick's Impact
Sam Carrick has been a revelation since his acquisition. His five goals and physical presence have solidified his line with Beck Malenstyn and either Zach Benson or Peyton Krebs.
“We’re not flashy,” Carrick explained. “We focus on shutting down opponents and contributing offensively when we can.”
Power’s Breakout Game
Owen Power didn’t score, but his impact was undeniable. His ability to carry the puck and initiate breakouts was crucial, with Buffalo dominating shots and scoring chances when he was on the ice.
Coach Lindy Ruff praised Power’s decision-making: “His reads on when to move the puck or hold it were spot on.”
Krebs Steps Up
Peyton Krebs saw significant time on the top line with Thompson and Alex Tuch. He was dynamic, setting up Thompson’s goal with a well-placed shot that created a rebound.
