Josh Allen wasted no time putting the Houston Texans under pressure in the Bills’ 2026 season opener, and the spotlight only got hotter after halftime when a hit on the quarterback could bring NFL discipline for Mario Edwards.
Buffalo and Houston both came into Week 1 at 12-5 after 2025 seasons that left each team with bigger goals. The Bills are trying to push past the Divisional Round and make a deeper run at a Super Bowl, while the Texans are building around C.J. Stroud and a defense that has been among the league’s best.
Allen was sharp right from the start in Houston. He helped Buffalo pile up 24 first-half points and was responsible for three touchdowns, two on the ground and one through the air. By halftime, the Bills were ahead 24-21.
The play that drew attention came after the break. With Buffalo still leading 24-21, Edwards went after Allen as the quarterback was making a play, and the contact was ruled illegal. The roughing-the-passer flag extended the Bills’ drive and added another problem for a Houston defense that had already been giving up explosive plays.
Allen had already completed throws of 43, 38, 19 and 18 yards before the hit, keeping Buffalo’s offense moving at a fast pace.
Under the NFL’s 2026 rulebook, roughing the passer falls under Rule 12, Section 2, Article 11. The penalty is 15 yards and an automatic first down, and a defender can also be ejected if the contact is deemed flagrant.
There’s also a fine attached. For 2026, the league’s listed amount is $17,911 for a first offense and $23,882 for a second offense. The NFL reviews plays after games to decide whether any further punishment is needed.
