The Buffalo Bills have stormed out of the gate on offense, piling up 77 points over their first two games against the Houston Texans and Detroit Lions. Now they get a little breathing room before a Week 3 meeting with the Los Angeles Chargers, and that extra time could matter for more than just game planning.
The biggest question hanging over Orchard Park is the status of DJ Moore. He left the Lions game in the first half with a shoulder injury and did not return, and while the injury is not viewed as a long-term issue, he may not be ready for the Chargers.
If Moore can’t go, rookie receiver Skyler Bell could be next in line.
Joe Brady said Friday that Bell’s opportunity is coming, and that he "kind of follows DJ [Moore] on everything he does" per Andy Young of Spectrum News 1.
Bell has not been active on game day yet this season, which makes sense considering he missed most of the preseason because of an injury and only got on the field in the final preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Even in that limited action, he made a strong impression with 7 catches for 49 yards and a 28-yard rushing touchdown.
His absence hasn’t been a setback in itself, but it has kept Bills fans waiting to see what he can add to the offense. If Bell had been active earlier, that would likely have meant another receiver such as Keon Coleman or Joshua Palmer would have been the odd man out.
Now the path may be opening. If Moore is unavailable against the Chargers, Bell should have a real shot to dress and get involved. And if that chance comes, it’s the kind of moment he can’t afford to let slip away.
That anticipation started back in April, when the Bills drafted Bell in the fourth round. The excitement was easy to understand: Buffalo added another receiver with real versatility, someone who can work inside and outside and also give the offense a jet-sweep option.
