The New England Patriots left Jacksonville with a 35-6 loss and a familiar message from captain Kevin Byard: keep it simple, lock in, and handle your business.
Byard reached back to Bill Belichick’s old playbook after Sunday’s defeat, borrowing one of the former coach’s most recognizable mantras as the Patriots try to steady themselves.
“As Bill Belichick used to always say, just do your job, and I think we’ll be fine,” said Byard during his postgame press conference.
He expanded on that idea by putting the focus on his own standard first, then on the rest of the locker room.
“For me, just being a leader and just being one of 11, I have to make sure that I’m playing at my highest level. Whatever I need to do to go out there, trying to go make a play to spark this team, that’s what I need to do and that’s what I’m focused on throughout this week. And I think that’s what everybody will be focused on, bringing the right attitude, bringing the right energy every single day, and just being one of 11 doing our job.”
The loss wasn’t just about the offense, though Drake Maye and the unit around him are sure to draw plenty of attention. New England’s defense got knocked off its usual standard as well, and the numbers were ugly: the 35 points allowed matched the most ever given up under head coach Mike Vrabel, tying a loss to Buffalo last December.
Even worse for the Patriots, Jacksonville turned every red-zone chance into points. The Jaguars went five for five on trips inside the 20, scoring five touchdowns.
That was the part Byard zeroed in on after the game. He made it clear he wasn’t interested in splitting blame between sides of the ball.
“We’re not pointing the finger at one side of the ball or anything like that. We have to go out there no matter where they put the ball down,” he said.
“As a defense, we have to go out there and line up, and we didn’t get a stop at all. They had the ball in the red zone five times and they scored five times.
That is inexcusable on our part.”
Byard, who called it an “old-fashioned ass-whopping,” has been through enough rough Sundays in an 11-year NFL career to know the response has to come fast. The Patriots won’t get much time to sit on this one, either. Next up is a trip to Buffalo to face the Bills, and Byard knows the turnaround has to start immediately.
“We have to come together. We understand what’s ahead of us,” he said.
“We’ll have to hear all the noise or whatever it may be, but I think the main thing for us as a team is that we will have to ignore all that noise and get back to work. That’s the only way we can improve.”
