Patriots Injuries Could Change What Bills Face In Week 4

Can the Patriots overcome their mounting injury challenges as they prepare to face the formidable Buffalo Bills in Week 4?

FOXBORO - The Patriots’ Week 4 injury picture is already looking messy, and it comes at a bad time with the unbeaten Bills on deck.

New England opened the week without three starters at practice and had several other players working in limited fashion as it gets ready for a divisional matchup with Buffalo. Three weeks into the season, the injuries are piling up fast, and the Patriots are now trying to manage that problem while preparing for a tough opponent.

Mike Vrabel, trying to frame the moment for his team, pointed to a story he said someone once told him.

"This is just a story that somebody told me that I liked," Mike Vrabel told reporters Wednesday. "It was that when in this particular case, God wanted David to be a king.

He didn't hand him a crown, right? He gave him a fight.

So, you’ve got to go through a fight. He gave him Goliath.

"That was just a little story that was said. If we want to get where we need to get to, we’re going to have to go through bumps along the way. This is all a part of the journey."

One of the names drawing attention is Christian Gonzalez. The cornerback was checked out on the sideline during last week’s loss after making a hard tackle on third down, but he stayed in the game. Afterward, he told reporters he was good, even though he was pulled late in the fourth quarter once the result was out of reach.

That matters this week. The Patriots are facing a Bills offense that includes Josh Allen, James Cook, D.J.

Moore and Dalton Kincaid, and losing Gonzalez would leave a major opening in the secondary against a quarterback who can punish any soft spot. New England needs its best defenders on the field to have a chance of holding up.

Drake Maye is also now on the injury report for the first time this season. The quarterback has been under the microscope after three uneven weeks throwing the ball and after questions resurfaced about last season’s shoulder injury. Still, he was a full participant Wednesday and went through the usual quarterback work.

After practice, Maye was asked directly whether the shoulder was affecting his play. He brushed it aside.

"No, it hasn’t. It hasn’t.

And it doesn’t impact my decision-making," Maye said. "That’s what makes and breaks play for quarterbacks.

I don’t feel like we’re struggling to move the ball. I think we’re turning the football over, doing things that are preventing us from scoring touchdowns.

And I think that’s one of the biggest things for me."

The offensive line is dealing with its own headache, and it’s a familiar one. The Patriots have lost their starting right guard in consecutive weeks, first with Mike Onwenu going down against the Pittsburgh Steelers with a broken right ankle, then with Greg Van Roten landing on IR Tuesday because of a thigh injury.

That leaves the team leaning on backups like Ben Brown and Walter Rouse. When Van Roten was hurt against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Rouse - a converted tackle - stepped in. It wasn’t his cleanest outing, but he stayed in the mix as the top option in practice.

"We'll kind of see where that goes for the week," Vrabel said, before implying thatAlijah Vera-Tucker wouldn't be moving from his spot at left guard.

The Patriots will release their second injury report of the week after practice tomorrow.

Josh Allen's Knee Suddenly Looms Over Bills Patriots Week

Josh Allens knee has become the latest Bills storyline heading into a division matchup with the Patriots, but there does not appear to be much panic in Buffalo. Offensive coordinator Joe Brady said he is not concerned about the injury Allen picked up in Week 3, and the quarterback is trending toward being available when the Bills line up in Week 4.

Allen was seen limping after the game, which naturally set off some unease given how much Buffalos offense runs through him. The next few practice reports will be the real indicator here, and those updates should offer a better read on whether this is just a brief scare or something the Bills need to monitor more closely through the week. Josh Allen Injury Worry Just Put Bills Fans On Edge

Bills fans had a brief scare after Josh Allens name came up in the aftermath of the latest game, but the conversation around the quarterback quickly shifted to reassurance from the team. Head coach Joe Brady addressed the concern directly, pushing back on the idea that there is a major issue and stressing the Bills focus as they try to stay steady through the week.

Allens availability always looms large in Buffalo, where everything on offense flows through him, and even a small hint of trouble tends to draw attention fast. The Bills are still in the middle of managing their current stretch, and with Brady emphasizing resilience, the bigger question now is whether this turns out to be nothing more than a momentary worry or the kind of storyline that lingers until the next update. Drake Maye Enters Bills Matchup With Growing Questions Around Him

Drake Mayes early NFL stretch has drawn some pointed scrutiny, and one of the more notable voices in that conversation is Thurman Thomas. The Pro Football Hall of Famer recently took a close look at the Patriots quarterbacks uneven start and raised the question of whether Maye has fully settled into life in the league, noting both his limited college starting background and the demands that come with playing quarterback in New England.

The timing adds another layer with the Patriots set to face the Bills, a game that will offer another measuring stick for Maye as he works through growing questions around his development. New England has also shuffled its receiving group, which only heightens the importance of how the young quarterback handles the challenge in front of him under Mike Vrabel and Josh McDaniels.
