Mike Vrabel wasn’t in the mood to let a postgame press conference steal his Sunday.
After the Patriots picked up their first win of the 2026 season, a 20-3 rout of Pittsburgh, New England’s head coach brushed off questions about the offense’s rough start and Drake Maye’s early-season struggles with a joke that made his point quickly. The win was enough to put Vrabel in a good frame of mind, and he made it clear he wanted to stay there.
Maye’s third NFL season has opened slowly. Through two games, he has one touchdown pass and four interceptions, and against Pittsburgh he again came up short of the end zone. He completed 14 passes for 208 yards and threw an interception, even as the Patriots rolled to a lopsided victory.
That didn’t stop one reporter from pressing Vrabel about whether he was worried about the offense’s production through two weeks. Vrabel’s answer came with a smile and a hard stop.
"Just tryna win the game, Ben. You’re not gonna ruin my Sunday," said Vrabel about his concern level with Maye and Co., "but I’ll come back to you tomorrow. Thanks, bud."
When another reporter tried to follow up, Vrabel shut that down too.
"You neither! You’re not gonna ruin it either," Vrabel said.
It had the feel of a coach who was happy to bank a win and not spend the rest of the afternoon unpacking everything else. Maybe it was a little bit of Bill Belichick energy, maybe it was just a coach protecting his Sunday. Either way, Vrabel made his message plain: the Patriots had won, and he was not letting anyone spoil that moment.
