Josh Allen's Backup Dilemma as Trubisky Joins Titans with Daboll Connection

With Trubisky set to join the Titans, the Bills face a pressing need to secure a reliable backup for franchise quarterback Josh Allen.

The Buffalo Bills find themselves in need of a new backup quarterback as Mitchell Trubisky is reportedly set to sign a two-year deal with the Tennessee Titans, reuniting with former offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.

Trubisky’s initial stint with the Bills came during the 2021 season when Daboll was orchestrating the offense. Daboll departed in 2022 to take the head coaching reins of the New York Giants, while Trubisky ventured to the Pittsburgh Steelers on a two-year deal as their starter.

That role didn’t pan out, leading Trubisky back to Buffalo in 2024 to back up Josh Allen. Now, he’s heading to Tennessee to support the 2025 No. 1 overall draft pick, Cam Ward, with Daboll now serving as the offensive coordinator under head coach Robert Saleh.

Trubisky’s departure is a significant hit for the Bills. He’s been more than just a reliable backup; he’s been a key part of the quarterback room and a trusted ally for Allen. Their friendship and Trubisky’s on-field insights have been invaluable for Allen between series.

With Shane Buechele re-signed, the Bills have a solid practice squad QB, but he’s not the solution for the backup role. The Bills need to explore options for Trubisky’s replacement, likely through free agency or a mid-round draft pick.

Given the limited draft capital this year, free agency seems the more prudent path. Drafting a rookie who might not see the field doesn’t align with the Bills’ needs, especially if Allen were to miss time. A seasoned veteran would be ideal, with potential targets including players like Sam Howell, Kyle Allen, or Gardner Minshew.

In this pivotal offseason, the Bills must carefully assess their options to ensure they maintain a strong quarterback room behind Josh Allen.
