Josh Allen doesn’t sound worried about what Jim Leonhard’s new defense is doing to the Bills offense in training camp. If anything, he sounds encouraged by it.
Allen said the variety Buffalo is seeing on defense right now should pay off once the regular season starts, because the looks Leonhard is throwing at the offense resemble what plenty of teams around the league will try to do.
“I think there's a lot of teams in the league that their defensive style is going to be very similar to what we're seeing right now,” Allen said. “So it's good practice, you know, switching up the fronts, different pressures. You know, sometimes dropping D-line and bringing line back.”
The Bills are still only a few days into camp, and Allen said the pressure package is only going to get more complicated from here.
“We haven't seen a whole lot of pressure yet,” Allen said. “But I know it's coming.”
For Allen, that’s exactly the point. The offense can’t just count on talent and wing it once the season begins. It has to build answers now, while the reps still matter and the mistakes are still teachable.
“So at some point during the next day or two in the film room, we're going to have to talk about it and just say, what are our answers? If we see something, what's our best check to get into? So on and so forth,” Allen said.
That kind of work, he said, is just as important as what happens on the field. Camp is where the Bills can spot problems, hash them out in meetings and sort through fixes before the games start counting.
That matters even more with an offense that’s still working through new personnel and continuing to develop under head coach Joe Brady.
Allen also came away impressed with what Buffalo’s defense has shown early in camp.
“I think they're just flying around,” Allen said. “Yeah, they're playing really well right now.”
The Bills won’t know exactly what they’re going to face when the regular season opens in Houston, but Allen believes the work against Leonhard’s defense is giving the offense a useful head start.
