Josh Allen’s latest NFL.com quarterback ranking took another hit after a rough Week 4, sliding from No. 4 to No. 5 as the Buffalo Bills try to shake off their first loss of the season.
Allen had opened the year at No. 1 in Weeks 1 and 2, then dropped to No. 4 last week. Now he’s down one more spot after Buffalo’s home loss to the New England Patriots.
The Bills had started 3-0 with wins over the Houston Texans, Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Chargers before falling in Week 4. Against New England, Allen finished with 253 passing yards, one passing touchdown and one interception while completing 69.7% of his throws. He also added a rushing touchdown.
That line would look strong for most quarterbacks. For Allen, though, it landed as another reminder that the standard is much higher for the 2024 MVP and future Hall of Famer who is widely viewed as the NFL’s best quarterback.
The turnover late in the game was the one that really stung. With less than two minutes left and Buffalo down by three, Allen escaped pressure by spinning away from a free rusher, then launched the ball into double coverage. Safety Craig Woodson came down with the interception.
It was the kind of mistake Allen used to make more often when he was younger, and one he’ll want out of his game now. Through four weeks, he has 1,039 passing yards, six passing touchdowns, three interceptions, 118 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns. That rushing total leads the NFL.
Even with those numbers, his last two outings against the Chargers and Patriots have been uneven. Over that stretch, Allen has thrown three interceptions, lost two fumbles and accounted for just one touchdown pass.
Ball security remains the big issue. Allen has fumbled in all four games this season, though only one of those four fumbles was recovered by the other team.
The timing of Week 5 only adds to the spotlight. Buffalo heads to Los Angeles for Monday Night Football against the Rams, who are 2-2. The article also notes that Myles Garrett won’t play in Week 5 and that it’s unknown whether Aaron Donald will suit up.
If Allen is going to push the Bills toward a championship for the first time in franchise history, the source of the concern is clear: he has to protect the football better.
Buffalo has reached the AFC Championship Game twice with Allen at the helm, and both times the Bills lost to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. Kansas City is 4-0 this season, with Mahomes looking like his old self after suffering a major knee injury in 2025.
Now the focus shifts to how Allen and the Bills respond after a home loss that dropped him again in the quarterback rankings. Week 5 against the Rams will say plenty.

Bills Offense Has A Growing Problem Defenses Keep Exploiting
The Bills opened the season looking like one of the leagues most efficient offenses, but the last stretch has exposed how quickly things can tilt when defenses start finding answers. Josh Allens recent turnovers have been part of the issue, yet the dip has gone beyond one player. Buffalo has also watched Dalton Kincaid, who gave the passing game an early boost, get effectively taken out of the plan over the last two games.
Joe Brady has made it clear the fix has to come from everyone, not just the quarterback, which is where the challenge gets bigger for Buffalo. If opposing defenses are squeezing Allens options and limiting Kincaids impact at the same time, the Bills need more consistent support across the offense to get back to the level they showed in September and early October. Josh Allen Faces A Growing MVP Concern Bills Fans Will Feel
Josh Allen still sits near the top of the NFL MVP race, but the margin is getting tighter as the season moves along. A mix of quieter recent performances, a knee injury and a dip in his rushing volume have all played into a shift at the sportsbooks, where his odds have shortened just enough to make the chase feel more real than it did a few weeks ago.
For Bills fans, the bigger concern is not just the award board but what it says about Allens overall rhythm and health. Interceptions have crept into the conversation, and with Brock Purdy and Trevor Lawrence gaining ground, traders and analysts are watching every snap for signs that Allen can stabilize before the race becomes a full-blown sprint. Bills Face A Rams Shift That Could Decide Monday Night
Matthew Staffords tape is still worth the Bills full attention heading into Monday night, because the Rams passing game has shown how much it can change when the pocket starts to close. Buffalo will also have to sort through a Los Angeles offense that has leaned on Kyren Williams as more than a runner, using him as a receiving option to keep drives moving and make the structure of the defense work a little harder.
On the other side, the Rams defense has been built around a steady dose of Cover 1 man coverage, with safety Trent McDuffie playing at a high level and Byron Young emerging as the top edge threat off the outside. For Buffalo, the matchup is less about one isolated wrinkle than the way all those pieces fit together, because the Rams have enough shifting parts to make Monday night feel like a test of patience as much as execution.
