FOX Sports’ football analysts have put Josh Allen at the top of the NFL quarterback mountain, edging him ahead of Patrick Mahomes in their latest ranking.
That’s a big statement, especially with Mahomes still in the mix despite recovering from a serious knee injury. But FOX Sports made its case clear: Allen’s resume, production and all-around game have him sitting alone at No. 1.
“If Allen could just win one championship, he might end up being in the conversation with Patrick Mahomes as the greatest quarterback of their generation,” FOX Sports wrote. “And really, he should be anyway.
He’s finished in the top five in MVP voting four straight years, and five of the last six. That also includes four finishes in the top four.
“Allen still has the strongest arm in the game and is a lock to run for 500 yards and double-digit touchdowns every year. He may not be putting up the gaudy numbers he did earlier in his career, but he’s still averaged 3,700 passing yards and 27 touchdowns the last two seasons with a questionable arsenal of weapons and no true No. 1 receiver. Allen was also the MVP in 2024 and might have ended up finishing higher than third last year if the Bills could have prevented him from getting sacked a career-high 40 times.
“This year, the Bills upgraded his receiving corps a little with D.J. Moore and he could get an even bigger boost with his old offensive coordinator Joe Brady now running things his way as the Bills head coach.
Allen is 30, so he isn’t exactly running out of time. But there is definitely a feeling in Buffalo and around the league that his time may be right now.”
Allen’s 2024 season backed up the praise. He finished with 3,668 passing yards, 25 passing touchdowns, 579 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns. Even so, Buffalo’s playoff run ended in the AFC Divisional Round with a loss to the Denver Broncos.
The career totals are already the kind that push a quarterback into rare air. Allen enters this season with 30,102 passing yards, 220 passing touchdowns, 4,721 rushing yards and 79 rushing touchdowns.
Now the question is whether Buffalo can finally get over the top with him. The Bills open the 2026 season against the Houston Texans, launching the Brady era.
“Still respecting the past and what's been here the last 10 years and not shying away from that, but also having his own twist on it,” Allen said after Brady was named HC. “It's been really good to see him embrace the role and step into it. The way that he talks to the guys, you can tell he's very well respected with everybody in that locker room, and it's only going to continue to grow in my opinion.”
Allen has the hardware, the numbers and now another new chapter around him. What he still doesn’t have is the one thing that would settle the biggest debate of all.
