Josh Allen’s start has been as loud as ever, but the conversation around the Bills quarterback is already shifting from what he’s doing now to how long this can keep going.
Through two games, Allen has powered Buffalo to a 2-0 start and looked every bit like the force that makes the Bills so dangerous. In Thursday’s 41-31 win over the Lions, he went 20-of-31 for 248 yards and three touchdowns, then added two more scores on the ground. For the season, he’s up to 582 passing yards and five passing touchdowns, plus 92 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns.
That production is exactly why Ryen Russillo said on Thursday that Buffalo’s championship chance may not stay open forever.
"The final point I want to make on Josh Allen here, I don't want to be dramatic about it, it's 17 carries in the first two weeks," Russillo said on his show. "That turns into 153 for the season. ... But watching him and knowing the history, again, if Cam Newton couldn't hold up physically, Cam Newton, who's the most spectacular specimen at the position we've ever seen, and we know that Allen's a specimen as well.
"This game has a way of slowing that player down. So, watching how great they look tonight and seeing how tough it is to defend this team, it makes me think, ...
Buffalo's gonna get to the Super Bowl and get one this year. Like, they've got to get it this year, next year, and then you start to, like, wonder, is Allen still going to be at the peak of his powers?
Him being slightly less as a runner isn't that big of a deal. But it was something I was thinking about, going like, 'He's got to get there soon.'
Because as we know, history tells us the running quarterbacks usually start slowing down, especially if he's going to have this kind of workload this season."
Bill Simmons also came away from Thursday night with a big view of Allen’s place in the league. He said the Bills quarterback has already proven himself and called him the best at his position.
"My takeaway watching him Sunday and then today, and I've always felt like he was the best quarterback in the league," Simmons said. "I feel like he's clearly the best player in the league now.
"He's the only offensive player who you could say is a one man show. So, when I look at him compared to all the other guys, it feels like everything is lined up for him."
Buffalo’s next game is against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sept. 27 at 1 p.m. ET.
