After one week, the Buffalo Bills have already given fans a pretty clear idea of what this version of the team wants to be: aggressive, explosive, and leaning hard on Josh Allen to make things happen. Now they get a quick turnaround and a primetime stage, hosting the Detroit Lions in the first regular-season game at the new Highmark Stadium on Thursday Night Football on Prime.
And if Week 1 told us anything, it’s that Buffalo is going to need its quarterback to keep stacking big plays. The running game still has to settle in, and the defense still has work to do before these games stop feeling like a shootout waiting to happen. But Allen was electric in Houston, Dalton Kincaid was a handful all afternoon, and Greg Rousseau delivered the kind of game-changing impact that can swing everything.
Here are a few bold calls for Thursday night.
Josh Allen ends up with the most total yards
Maybe that doesn’t sound especially daring at first glance, but it’s not automatic with Detroit on the other sideline. The last time these teams met, Jared Goff posted the bigger total-yardage line, throwing 38-of-59 for 494 yards and five touchdowns while adding two carries for 13 yards. Allen answered with 23-of-34 passing for 362 yards and two touchdowns, plus 11 rushes for 68 yards and two scores.
This matchup sets up like a track meet. Detroit’s defense comes in with real issues at safety, with both starters out, and that opens the door for Allen to push the ball further downfield than he did at times in Week 1. He should be able to get past the underneath stuff and flirt with, or even clear, 400 passing yards.
There’s also the rushing side of the equation. Allen doesn’t need much help to pile up total yards, and if Buffalo’s defense focuses on limiting James Cook III again, the quarterback may have to do even more.
FanDuel Sportsbook has Allen at +265 to throw for 300+ yards, with options all the way up to 375+ yards at +1200. On the ground, his least-likely rushing prop is 40+ yards at +158, while he’s listed at +1900 to lead the game in rushing.
If anybody can pull that off under the lights, it’s Allen.
Dalton Kincaid leads all receivers
Kincaid was a nightmare for Houston in Week 1. He caught five passes on six targets for 130 yards and looked like exactly the kind of mismatch Buffalo wants to keep exploiting. Joe Brady moved him around the formation, using him down the middle and outside as a boundary receiver, and Kincaid responded by looking every bit like a wideout in a tight end’s body.
That matters even more now with Detroit’s starting safety tandem banged up. Buffalo has big plans for Kincaid, especially with how much the offense wants to use 13 personnel, and this could be another night where he’s the focal point of the passing game.
FanDuel Sportsbook has Kincaid with the fourth-best odds at +650 to finish with the most receiving yards. That’s not a lock, especially this early in the season, but the setup is there for another huge night. He’s also listed at +230 to record a 30+ yard reception.
Another 100-yard game is very much on the table, and a first touchdown of the season wouldn’t be a surprise either.
Greg Rousseau keeps causing problems
Rousseau was one of the biggest reasons Buffalo walked out of Houston with a win. He hit C.J.
Stroud with a strip-sack on the Texans’ opening drive, then did it again on Houston’s final possession in regulation. Those two plays were massive, and without them, the Bills might have been in real trouble.
Now comes only Rousseau’s second game ever at outside linebacker in his NFL career, which makes the ceiling even more interesting. There’s film on him at the position now, but his size, length, and speed still make him a tough problem to solve.
FanDuel currently gives Rousseau the second-best odds to record a sack at -108, and another one feels very live. He’s playing in a way he hadn’t really shown before in Sean McDermott’s scheme, and being off the line a bit seems to be unlocking what he can do. Another sack, another pressure, maybe even another turnover or pass breakup - he looks capable of all of it.
