The Buffalo Bills are heading into Week 1 with a brand-new defensive voice, and Jim Leonhard isn’t interested in letting the Houston Texans settle in at all.
That’s the challenge facing Buffalo on Sunday afternoon at NRG Stadium, where the Bills haven’t won since 2006. It’s also the kind of opener that puts pressure on first-time head coach Joe Brady and first-time NFL defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard, especially with Houston expected to bring plenty of problems. Still, the message from the Bills’ new staff is clear: they’re not planning to back away from the moment.
What Leonhard actually wants his defense to be was the real question, and Matt Bové put it to him directly. Bové asked Leonhard what people mean when they describe him as an aggressive defensive play caller.
“I’m not asking, I guess, from a schematic standpoint, but you know, we’ve heard so many people say so many times that you’re an aggressive defensive play caller. In your words, what does that mean?”
Leonhard’s answer gave a pretty clean window into how he sees the job.
“To me, that just means you’re not going to let the offense dictate the game. Right?
We have to throw our punches, too. And… they’re strategic.
Right? You’re doing them on purpose.
I don’t like to be reckless as far as how I call a game, but I’m not just gonna sit back and say like ‘we’re just gonna out-execute you week in, week out, every situation that comes up throughout the game.‘ So, there are certain scenarios within a game that we wanna be really aggressive, and there’s others that we will consistently be a little bit more passive on.
Right? And that’s the way I like to call games - and you know, we have to make an offense react to us at times.
Right? Otherwise, the good offenses - if they get in a rhythm, right - sometimes it’s hard to regain the momentum.
So, you have to keep offenses off rhythm, whether it’s speed him up or it’s slow him down, there’s multiple ways you can do that.”
That’s the clearest look yet at Leonhard’s defensive mindset. It’s aggressive, but not careless.
The idea is pressure with purpose, not chaos for its own sake. He wants Buffalo to force the issue, make an offense adjust, and avoid letting a dangerous unit get comfortable.
Leonhard even framed it like boxing, talking about “throwing our punches” in “strategic” fashion. That’s the balancing act for Buffalo: be disruptive without becoming reckless. If Leonhard’s defense is going to make an early statement, it sounds like it will come through controlled aggression - and a refusal to let Houston run the show.

The Bills have at least put a temporary pin in one of their quieter training camp competitions, naming Dee Alford as their primary punt returner on the first unofficial depth chart for the season opener against the Houston Texans. It is only a starting point, of course, but it gives Buffalo a clearer picture heading into Week 1 and puts Alford in position to handle a role that can swing field position in a hurry.
Ray Davis and Khalil Shakir are next in line on the depth chart, giving the Bills a couple of familiar options behind Alford as they sort out special teams roles for the opener. Buffalo also has veteran return specialist Greg Dortch on the practice squad, and his presence gives the team another possible answer if the need arises as the roster gets finalized for game day. Josh Allens track record in Houston is one of those quirks Bills fans know by heart, and it does not exactly inspire comfort heading into another matchup with the Texans.
