Will Anderson isn’t handing out compliments lightly, but Buffalo’s James Cook earned one from the Texans star ahead of Week 1.
Anderson, one of the driving forces behind Houston’s defense, made it clear Wednesday that the Bills have his full attention. He also put Cook at the top of the running back mountain.
“This is an AFC Championship matchup,” Anderson said in a Wednesday press conference. “Two really good teams.
We have a ton of respect for them. Josh Allen leading the way, really great offensive line.
James Cook, best running back in the league. . . . The type of atmosphere that I’m feeling like it’s gonna be on Sunday is gonna be that AFC Championship-type feel.”
That kind of praise carries weight coming from a player who is a Defensive Player of the Year candidate and part of what the source describes as arguably the best defense in the NFL. Houston’s defense is expected to make Buffalo work for everything.
Cook’s numbers help explain why Anderson sees him that way. In all 17 regular-season games for the Bills in 2025, Cook piled up 1,621 rushing yards, 12 rushing touchdowns, 291 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns. He led the NFL in rushing yards and rushing yards per game, and he did it as a three-time Pro Bowler.
He kept producing in the postseason, too. Against the Jacksonville Jaguars and Denver Broncos in the 2025 playoffs, Cook finished with 163 rushing yards and 29 receiving yards. Buffalo beat Jacksonville before falling to Denver.
The Bills now enter the 2026 season with Cook carrying a résumé that includes 4,259 rushing yards, 32 rushing touchdowns, 1,174 receiving yards and nine receiving touchdowns. He’s become one of the league’s most dangerous dual-threat backs, and Buffalo will lean on him again.
The bigger picture in Buffalo is changing, too. The Bills went 12-5 last season, Sean McDermott was fired as head coach and Brady was promoted to head coach.
The front office also had an active offseason, adding D.J. Moore from the Chicago Bears and signing Bradley Chubb and C.J.
Gardner-Johnson in free agency.
With Cook, Moore and Allen leading the way, Buffalo is looking to finally get over the hump. The pressure on Allen is obvious, and the source notes that time is running short for him to win a championship.

Bills Punt Return Battle Finally Has A Week 1 Front-Runner
The Bills have at least put a temporary pin in one of their quieter training camp competitions, naming Dee Alford as their primary punt returner on the first unofficial depth chart for the season opener against the Houston Texans. It is only a starting point, of course, but it gives Buffalo a clearer picture heading into Week 1 and puts Alford in position to handle a role that can swing field position in a hurry.
Ray Davis and Khalil Shakir are next in line on the depth chart, giving the Bills a couple of familiar options behind Alford as they sort out special teams roles for the opener. Buffalo also has veteran return specialist Greg Dortch on the practice squad, and his presence gives the team another possible answer if the need arises as the roster gets finalized for game day. Josh Allen Faces A Week 1 Problem Bills Fans Know Too Well
Josh Allens track record in Houston is one of those quirks Bills fans know by heart, and it does not exactly inspire comfort heading into another matchup with the Texans. Across four road starts against Houston, including the postseason, Allen has had a hard time finding rhythm, with the Texans consistently closing down the pocket and making life difficult for Buffalos offense.
