Drake Maye Enters Bills Matchup With Growing Questions Around Him

As NFL Hall of Famer Thurman Thomas raises concerns over Drake Maye's readiness for the big leagues, the New England Patriots face a pivotal showdown against the undefeated Buffalo Bills.

Drake Maye’s first three games have brought the kind of scrutiny that comes with being the quarterback in New England, and Thurman Thomas isn’t sugarcoating what he sees.

Ahead of Sunday’s Patriots-Bills matchup, the Pro Football Hall of Famer said Maye still looks like a young passer learning the league in real time. On “One Bills Live,” Thomas was asked about the quarterback’s early-season issues after New England’s 35-6 loss to Jacksonville, and he didn’t hesitate.

“I don't think he's grasped the NFL just yet,” Thomas said.

Thomas also pointed to Maye’s college background, arguing that he came into the league without the kind of seasoning some quarterbacks get from piling up more starts in college.

“He's not a groomed quarterback,” Thomas said while discussing Maye's limited starting experience in college.

The Hall of Fame running back also emphasized the pressure that comes with the job in Foxborough, a spot that has carried a heavy standard since Tom Brady left.

“There's a lot of pressure being the quarterback in New England,” Thomas said.

He tied that pressure to the current setup around Maye, specifically mentioning head coach Mike Vrabel and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Thomas noted that McDaniels is working with a young quarterback while bringing the kind of system he used with Brady, which can be a lot to absorb for a player still finding his footing.

New England’s issues, though, aren’t limited to the quarterback alone. The Patriots have turned over a lot at receiver, and A.J.

Brown is currently on injured reserve. Thomas and the “One Bills Live” crew talked through how different the supporting cast looks now compared with last season.

Even with Maye’s rough start, Thomas wasn’t ready to write off the Patriots after three games. New England won 13 games last season, and the discussion pushed back against the idea that one ugly afternoon means the whole team has fallen apart.

That sets up Sunday’s trip to Buffalo, where the Bills are 3-0 after a 24-16 win over the Chargers. The Patriots are trying to avoid slipping to 1-3, and Thomas expects a better fight than the one they showed against Jacksonville.

And as always in this rivalry, the Bills know the Patriots well, and these divisional games rarely come easy.

Josh Allen's Knee Suddenly Looms Over Bills Patriots Week

Josh Allens knee has become the latest Bills storyline heading into a division matchup with the Patriots, but there does not appear to be much panic in Buffalo. Offensive coordinator Joe Brady said he is not concerned about the injury Allen picked up in Week 3, and the quarterback is trending toward being available when the Bills line up in Week 4.

Allen was seen limping after the game, which naturally set off some unease given how much Buffalos offense runs through him. The next few practice reports will be the real indicator here, and those updates should offer a better read on whether this is just a brief scare or something the Bills need to monitor more closely through the week. Josh Allen Injury Worry Just Put Bills Fans On Edge

Bills fans had a brief scare after Josh Allens name came up in the aftermath of the latest game, but the conversation around the quarterback quickly shifted to reassurance from the team. Head coach Joe Brady addressed the concern directly, pushing back on the idea that there is a major issue and stressing the Bills focus as they try to stay steady through the week.

Allens availability always looms large in Buffalo, where everything on offense flows through him, and even a small hint of trouble tends to draw attention fast. The Bills are still in the middle of managing their current stretch, and with Brady emphasizing resilience, the bigger question now is whether this turns out to be nothing more than a momentary worry or the kind of storyline that lingers until the next update. Patriots Injuries Could Change What Bills Face In Week 4

The Bills are getting a familiar kind of mid-September wrinkle from New England, where the Patriots are piecing together their Week 4 preparation with a crowded injury report. Several starters were absent from practice, including important bodies in the secondary and along the offensive line, and a few players showed up on the report for the first time this season. For Buffalo, it is the sort of development that can alter a game plan before the teams even take the field.

Offensive line shuffling has become a bigger concern with recent injuries to starting guards, forcing backup players into more prominent roles. The Bills will be watching those changes closely, because even a short-handed Patriots front can still affect how Buffalo attacks the matchup. For now, the biggest question is not just who New England will have available, but how much of the Week 4 game plan gets reshaped before kickoff. [Read more 🡒]
