Ryan Poles, the general manager of the Chicago Bears, recently found himself navigating some family drama after trading wide receiver D.J. Moore to the Buffalo Bills. The move didn't sit well with his son, a die-hard Bears fan, who was less than pleased with his dad's decision.
Poles shared the amusing anecdote with reporters, explaining how his son’s disappointment was somewhat alleviated by a thoughtful gesture from Moore. The receiver sent a video message to Poles’ son, reassuring him that trades are just part of the business.
While the trade might have caused a stir at home, it was a different story in Poles’ hometown. Growing up just 90 miles east of Buffalo in Canandaigua, Poles has deep roots in the area, and his extended family, who are Bills fans, were thrilled with the news.
"My immediate family’s not very happy with me," Poles joked, "but my extended family is very happy with me."
Poles comes from a football-rich background, with his father, Robert “Junior” Poles, having played in the NFL and later transitioning into coaching. This connection to the sport runs deep, adding another layer to the family dynamics surrounding the trade.
As for D.J. Moore, he’s embracing the opportunity to join the Bills and play alongside quarterback Josh Allen. During a Zoom call with reporters, Moore expressed his excitement about joining a team that’s been a powerhouse in the AFC.
“When I heard it was the Bills, I got super excited,” Moore shared. “I’m ready to roll.”
Reflecting on his previous season, Moore noted the thrill of being part of a winning team and looks forward to continuing that momentum in Buffalo.
“Last year was my first winning season, so I got a taste of what everybody has been getting a taste of here in Buffalo,” he said. “It was good.
It was fun. The atmosphere was amazing.”
In a humorous nod to his time with the Bears, Moore had a cheese grater-a playful reference to the rivalry with the Green Bay Packers-visible on a shelf during the call, showcasing his lighthearted side even amidst the transition.
