Dion Dawkins didn’t need long to figure out what CJ Gardner-Johnson brings to the Bills. After training camp practice Monday morning at St. John Fisher University, Buffalo’s left tackle talked about the defensive back like someone who’d already become a familiar presence, even though Gardner-Johnson has only been with the team since mid March.
Dawkins was asked about Gardner-Johnson, and the praise came fast.
“I love the guy… he’s literally one of the teammates I didn’t know that I needed… he unlocked a whole side of the me that I’m like, bro, you’re my guy.”
For Dawkins, the connection seems to go beyond simple chemistry. He said there’s always been a more professional, buttoned-up version of himself, but Gardner-Johnson has helped him feel comfortable being fully himself around the building.
“I’m going to put myself first instead of putting everyone else first in certain situations outside of ball.”
That mindset shift matters to Dawkins as he enters the 10th year of his NFL career. Gardner-Johnson is in his eighth season, and Dawkins said the veteran defensive back has had a real effect on his headspace.
He also had a little fun describing Gardner-Johnson’s style and energy, calling him another “Tazmanian devil” who is free and exactly himself at all times.
That’s the kind of bond that seems to be forming between two players who bring their own personality to the field - and, as Dawkins sees it, are also pretty darn good at football.

Mike Danna Faces A Tough Bills Battle To Stick Around
Mike Danna arrived in Buffalo on a short-term deal with plenty to prove, and that is what makes his next few months so interesting. The veteran outside linebacker spent six seasons with the Chiefs before signing with the Bills in May 2026, bringing experience to a position group that already has plenty of traffic. After a 2025 season in Kansas City that was his least productive, with injury playing a part, Danna now has to show he can still be a useful piece for a defense that values depth and versatility.
The problem is the Bills do not appear to have much room for sentiment at outside linebacker. Danna is joining a crowded competition, and every practice rep matters when a roster spot is not guaranteed. For a player with his background, the path to sticking around is not about reputation or past rings, but about finding a way to stand out in a group that already includes established pass rushers and other candidates fighting for the same limited openings.
