Cam Skattebo’s rookie season had all the makings of a breakout campaign-until it came to a brutal halt in Week 8. The Giants running back, who had been one of the few bright spots in a struggling offense, suffered a devastating injury against the Eagles: an open tibia fracture, a ruptured deltoid ligament, and a dislocated right ankle. It was the kind of injury that sends a chill through the stadium-players kneeling, coaches silent, and teammates visibly shaken as Skattebo was carted off the field.
But on Wednesday morning, just weeks after that horrific moment, Skattebo gave Giants fans a reason to smile. In a video posted from the team’s facility, the 23-year-old walked in under his own power-no scooter, no crutches, just steady steps and a quiet show of resilience. For a player who had been navigating the aftermath of a complex leg injury with the help of a scooter, this was a major milestone.
And make no mistake, Skattebo had been producing before the injury derailed his season. Through eight games, he racked up 410 rushing yards and five touchdowns, adding another 207 yards and two scores through the air.
He brought a burst of energy to an offense that desperately needed it, showing off a tough, downhill running style paired with underrated hands out of the backfield. He wasn’t just filling a role-he was carving out a real future.

His chemistry with fellow rookie Jaxson Dart was one of the more intriguing developments for the Giants early in the season. Dart, who himself missed time last month due to a concussion, had found a reliable outlet in Skattebo, and the two were beginning to build something that looked like a foundation. But with Skattebo sidelined and Dart in and out of the lineup, the offense lost what little rhythm it had.

Since that Week 8 loss to the Eagles-a game that felt like a turning point in all the wrong ways-the Giants have dropped five straight. Injuries have piled up, and the offense has sputtered without its rookie spark plug. The team, now sitting at 2-11, parted ways with head coach Brian Daboll in November and became the first team officially eliminated from playoff contention following a Week 12 loss to the Lions.
There’s no sugarcoating it: this season has been a rough ride for the Giants. But Skattebo’s return to walking is more than just a rehab update-it’s a glimpse of hope. For a franchise in transition, seeing one of its most promising young players take a step-literally-toward recovery is a reminder that there’s still something to build on.
His journey back to the field won’t be easy. Recovering from a combination of injuries like his takes time, patience, and a whole lot of work behind the scenes. But if his early progress is any indication, Skattebo is attacking rehab the same way he runs-head-on, with purpose.
And when he does return, the Giants will be getting back a player who’s already shown he can be a difference-maker.
