C.J. Gardner-Johnson gave Bills fans a quick reason to exhale after leaving Saturday’s training camp session with what was initially labeled a calf strain.
The veteran safety, one of Buffalo’s key offseason additions on a one-year, $3.5 million deal, was carted off the field during practice, sparking immediate concern. It’s an important spot for the Bills to reinforce after Taylor Rapp’s departure left a hole in the secondary, and Gardner-Johnson was brought in to help steady that part of the defense.
Buffalo is getting a player with real mileage and real pedigree. Gardner-Johnson arrived with more than seven years of NFL experience, plus a Super Bowl ring from his 2024 run with the Philadelphia Eagles. He also came to the AFC East after a season split between the Houston Texans and the Chicago Bears, a year in which he posted 66 combined tackles, two interceptions, and four defended passes.
But the early scare didn’t keep him quiet for long. Gardner-Johnson hopped on his livestream and said he’s in good spirits, while making clear his goal is simple: get back on the field.
"We're good, shout out to the docs, everybody that was a part of the team that officially helped me stay uplifted, uprooted for this..." stated Gardner-Johnson. "I'll still be practicing, I'm still gonna be trying to practice, I ain't gonna lie.
There hasn’t been any additional word on how serious the injury is, but Buffalo still has more than a month before the regular season begins. That gives Gardner-Johnson a window to recover and get himself ready for what’s ahead.

Bills Defense Suddenly Has A New Camp Concern With C.J. Gardner-Johnson
Training camp has only just gotten rolling, and the injury list is already starting to reshape a few roster pictures around the league. For the Bills, the latest concern sits in the secondary with C.J. Gardner-Johnson, whose arrival this offseason was meant to give Buffalo another experienced piece in the defensive backfield.
The timing matters because camp is where teams sort out rotations, roles and chemistry, and any interruption can slow that process fast. Buffalo is already trying to gauge what Gardner-Johnson means for its defense, and now it has to do that while waiting to learn how serious the setback is and what it could mean for the weeks ahead. Bills Fans Still Have One Brutal Debate From That Eagles Loss
The Bills Week 17 loss to the Eagles still lingers because it was the kind of defeat that never settles on one clear turning point. Buffalo had the edge in several statistical areas and still walked away empty-handed, with the game swinging on a sequence of costly moments that included a sack and fumble, a blocked extra point, a key defensive stop and a failed two-point try.
For fans, the frustration is in trying to decide which mistake really defined it. Was it the turnover, the special teams breakdown or the late offensive decision that came up short? The answer may depend on how each person watched the game, but the bigger takeaway is the same: the Bills had enough chances to control the night and let too many of them slip away. [Read more 🡒]
