The Buffalo Bills have filled out their practice squad, officially signing 13 players one day after trimming their roster to 53.
Among the group is quarterback Shane Buechele, whose path back to Buffalo has already included plenty of stops. The 28-year-old spent two years as a starter at SMU after beginning his college career at Texas, then entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Chiefs after the 2021 NFL Draft.
Buechele’s time with Kansas City has been a cycle of waivers, practice-squad stints and promotions. The Chiefs waived him after the preseason, brought him back on the practice squad, elevated him to the roster and later re-signed him as an exclusive rights-free agent before sending him back to the practice squad again.
After Kansas City released him, he landed on Buffalo’s practice squad, eventually signed a futures deal with the Bills and was placed on injured reserve in August of 2024. Buffalo brought him back on the practice squad in 2025, but the Chiefs later signed him to their active roster late in the season.
The Bills then signed him to a contract before releasing him after the preseason.
In 2025, Buechele played in one game for Kansas City and completed seven of 14 passes for 88 yards.
His college production was sturdy over five seasons at SMU and Texas: a 63.1 completion percentage, 11,660 passing yards, 87 touchdowns and 32 interceptions, plus 478 rushing yards and eight rushing scores across 56 games.
